Happy February!

Our "Grandparent Show" was a wonderful event!  The students performed with enthusiasm, energy and excitment.  Both classes did a marvelous job and each child should be very proud of him or herself.  Thank you for all your support with baking and juice donations.  Everyone enjoyed all your great work!

The students will be receiving their first report card on Friday - February 8th.  Please remember that your child is growing and learning each day.   Skills that are developing need consistent practice to master. We have learned many important and valuable skills so far this year and with your support, guidance and encouragement, your child will continue to flourish.  Thank you for letting your child learn by doing!

Reading:
This month we will be concentrating on mastering our sound/letter association skills.  This will enable your child to be able to decode new words that are not part of our high frequency word list.  This skill will also be used to help your child to write his/her own messages.  Please note that I will be encouraging each student to use "inventive spelling" for any word that is not found on our word wall list.  Do your best to try to "decode" her/his attempts at writing notes.  You will be able to see which sounds your child can hear when saying a word phonetically.  It is always fun to watch this skill develop!

Math:
This month we will continue to work on numbers from
1-12.  Now that we have gone past #10, make sure your child understands that 11 is not merely 1+1 added together, but it means a group of 10 + 1 etc...Shortly, we will be starting a new chapter on shapes and fractions.  It is always helpful to give your child practical experience with any new skill.  A fun way to share fractions with your child is by cooking with him/her. And the best part is,  you get to eat the homework!
