September 3, 2008

Please read the classroom management packet and review with a parent or guardian. After you and your parent or guardian have read and reviewed the packet please have the last page signed and returned to me by Monday, September 8.

Class Expectations
Mrs. Driscoll
World Language Department

Voice mail #:  Ext 243
Extra-help and make-up work:  after school on, Tues., Wed., or Thurs. (if possible with notice please).

First and foremost I would like to welcome you all back to school and to my class.  As your teacher, I will appreciate your friendliness, cooperation, and hard work.  I’m looking forward to teaching you and I’m excited about the things you’ll be learning.

In order to provide a learning environment conducive to good learning it is important that we all understand and agree to the following class rules.  The rules in the O’Donnell Middle  School Handbook will also be observed in class.

·TARDINESS:  Students must arrive on time.  Passing time allows for the student to go to lockers and the bathrooms.  Students arriving late without a pass will accept the consequences.

·BE PREPARED:  Students are expected to bring all necessary materials to class:  text, notebook, homework, pen/pencil etc.  Passes will be issued on a limited basis and should constitute reasons of great importance.

·RESPECT:  Students are expected to respect one another and the teacher, as  well as conduct themselves in an appropriate  manner at all times. (Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.  NO swearing, teasing, taunting, yelling, arguing or inappropriate comments or discussions.  Graffiti and defacement of school property will not be tolerated and any incident will be reported to the school administration.  All objects/supplies on the teacher’s desk, in file cabinets and classroom closets and tables are to be considered personal property. If you need to borrow something, PLEASE ASK FOR PERMISSION.  Disrespect toward any student or teacher WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!

·CONDUCT:  Students must be attentive, quiet, responsive to the activities related to this class.  No behavior will be tolerated which interferes with a student’s right to learn or the teacher’s effort to teach.

· Sleeping during class or engaging in activities not related to the class (example:  doing homework or assignment for another class) is unacceptable and will result in appropriate consequences.
· No food  or beverages allowed in class.
· No gum chewing.

*MAKE-UP:  Students are to make arrangements for make-up work as soon as they return to school.  By using the homework buddy system  and the Homework Hotline, students should be able to reduce the amount of make-up work.  Students are expected to take missed quizzes and tests after school.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of all work necessary to fulfill the term requirements.

Extra-credit or retaking  of tests and quizzes is minimal.  Students are encouraged to seek extra help at the earliest sign of difficulty and prior to testing days.

If a student fails a test, a retake can be taken, only if the student receives remedial help before scheduling the retake.  The two grades will be averaged together and the average will be recorded.  The test can not be taken the same day the student receives  remedial help.  The student must first study and  return for the retake of the test/quiz.
Tests and quizzes must be made-up or retaken within 2-5 days of the original date.

*COMPUTERS:  Students must be reminded that translation programs may not be used in situations where the student is asked to  write original sentences, paragraphs, compositions etc. in the target language.  This will be viewed as a form of CHEATING and the student will receive a zero grade for the assignment.  Computer applications that help reinforce vocabulary, grammar patterns, and access cultural information are encouraged.

Parents:  Parents are encouraged to call to discuss student progress or any concerns.

Use of the student agenda book as a form of communication, between teacher and parent/guardian is strongly recommended.

CONSEQUENCES:  Breaking classroom rules and or school rules mentioned in the Student Handbook, may result in one or more of the following:

1.    Verbal warning
2.    Phone call / note home (via the agenda book or other form)
3.    After school session
4.    Office referral

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Student Evaluation and Grading System
Mrs. Driscoll

The main reasons for learning a foreign language are to communicate in that language and to become familiar with the customs and culture of the language. Therefore, it is critical that the student make a sincere effort to listen attentively, study consistently, read, write, and participate regularly in the target language. Student evaluation and academic success rely on this commitment to communication in the target language on a daily basis in the classroom.

HOMEWORK  25%:    At the beginning of each week the entire week’s homework assignments will be posted on the classroom’s agenda board. Students will be given class time to copy the entire week’s homework assignments into their agenda books.  Each day’s homework assignment will be reviewed and corrected on the following day. Homework may consist of the written activities from the text, worksheets, workbook exercises, projects, vocabulary and grammar patterns.  Unless otherwise stated, homework is due the day after it is assigned.  1/2 CREDIT ONLY will be given to any late homework assignment. On a major project the student may lose partial credit. To receive credit, the assignment must be the student’s own work, it must be complete, neat and legible.  No computer-translated material will be accepted in place of original student work. I can tell the difference and THIS WILL BE CONSIDERED CHEATING!

QUIZZES 30%: Quizzes will be given frequently to check student performance and understanding of the materials.  Quizzes may sometimes be unannounced.  They will be given in various forms: written, listening comprehension exercises, or short speaking activities.

TESTS  20%: Tests are usually given at the end of a Unit.  They may be standardized and/or teacher-made. An exam will most often include listening, reading comprehension, and written activities. Certain group or individual performance activities may also be evaluated as tests.

ORAL PARTICIPATION  15%, Students will be expected to:
·Actively engage in all class activities (group recitation, paired activities, one-on-one question and answer drills, etc.).
· Actively contribute to relevant class discussions in the target language.
· Give relevant and complete answers to questions in the target language.
· Respectfully and actively listen to others.
· Strive toward accuracy and precision in all phases of class work.
· Follow directions.
· Remain “on task” especially during cooperative activities.
· Show sincere effort to comprehend and communicate in the target language.
· Actively participate in the language laboratory activities.

NOTEBOOK  10%:      As part of the World Language Department’s commitment to improve study skills, notebooks will be checked each term and graded accordingly, (see sheet on how to set up your notebook).

ANY STUDENT FOUND CHEATING OR HELPING SOMEONE TO CHEAT  ON A TEST OR QUIZ WILL AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE A ZERO ON THAT PARTICULAR TEST OR QUIZ.  A PHONE CALL WILL ALSO BE MADE TO THE PARENTS OF THE STUDENT AND THE ADMINISTRATION WILL ALSO BE NOTIFIED OF THE INCIDENT.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Master Notebook
Mrs. Driscoll

A student’s notebook grade is worth 10% of his/her grade each term.  The notebook will be checked every term.  The grade will be based on organization and content (emphasis on content).
Please keep the following items in your notebook, each term:

1. Student Evaluation and Grading System
2. Class Expectations
3. Weekly homework agenda.
4. Homework (please label each assignment, include your name, date, page and activity numbers.
5. Notes:  Vocabulary lists, teacher given notes, informational hand-outs, worksheets etc.  This information may at times be used during a test or quiz at the discretion of the teacher.
6. Language Laboratory activity sheets

SUGGESTIONS:

· Students should have a Five (5) subject notebook or a three ring binder with several dividers.  (Three one subject notebooks inside a three ring binder also works very well.  It is more durable and the notebook is automatically organized into a classwork / notes, homework and vocabulary section).
· Students should also have a pocket folder for storing tests, quizzes and hand-outs.
· Divide your notebook into sections:  notes, homework, vocabulary, hand-outs, quizzes and tests.
· Skip a page if you are absent, so you can fill in missing notes.
· At the end of the term, transfer your homework assignments, handouts etc. to a reserve file.  (Do not throw them away as they may be needed in the future as study aides for exams!)
