WELCOME TO GRADE 8 SOCIAL STUDIES AT PARKER MIDDLE
Hello Parker scholars and/or parents/guardians-
Class update: We have finished the review of Colonial America and are now beginning to discuss the causes of the American Revolution. We are also covering the upcoming (historic) presidential election. The following is a letter from the National Student Mock Election (which we are participating in):
Dear Parent or Guardian,
The National Student/Parent Mock Election is non-partisan educational program endorsed by both Democrats and Republicans. It is not intended to be predictive of adult voting patterns. As part of our class participation in the Mock Election, we have been discussing voting and leadership. We invite you to share your thoughts about these subjects with your son or daughter in a brief conversation. You will have the opportunity to know more about what he or she is learning and we hope your child will enjoy hearing your thoughts on the current campaign.
You may ask your child:
What he or she thinks makes a good leader.
What he or she has learned about voting and how it works.
And you may want to discuss with your child:
What qualities you look for in the person who will head our federal government.
What else you take into account in deciding which candidate to vote for.
Your child will vote in school on October 29, 2008. All results for the school will be tabulated and transmitted to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston, where results will be totaled for the state of Massachusetts and then sent to the National Headquarters at the University of Arizona.
Thank you for you involvement and support.
CURRENT ASSIGNMENTS: THE PATRIOTS' PEN is due for 8 blue (and students from Yellow, Green, Red or Purple who choose to participate) on OCTOBER 24, 2008. Any problems or questions please see me.
PLEASE NOTE- Students should keep a S.S. notebook which includes class notes. *Students who are absent need to get the class notes on the day that they return.*
IMPORTANT: THURSDAY is extra-help afternoon- students may stay for help in any subject or to make-up Social Studies work.
Thanks, Mrs. Houlker, grade 8 S.S.
