Welcome to the Music Room Page!

     Thank you for checking back.  Did you click on the FLASHCARDS above this message?  How many words did you remember?  
     It was nice to meet some of the parents at the school orientation on September 18th.  This page will be updated monthly to reflect some things going on in musical instruction.  
     All grade levels will practice "Focused Listening" each week in music class.  An instrumental piece of music will be played and the composer name, country of origin and dates that they lived will be given.  Once the computers are working and online we will also learn more about the composer's life and additional music titles.  This practice will help train student listening as we identify instrument families, featured instruments, patterns and many other elements.  I encourage all students to visit the public library and inquire about featured composers.  In most cases there will be CD recordings that can be borrowed, listened to and recirculated just like books.  Take advantage of this "free" music as your students build their listening library.
     Kindergarten students are learning songs and music games to help learn each others' names and become familiar with practices required for working in groups and taking turns.  They have already shown great potential and interest in singing, moving and coordinating steady rhythm!
     Students in Grades 1 and 2 are learning how to convert speech to rhythm on percussion instruments.   Letting the instruments "speak for them" is one way to build confidence and accurate rhythmic coordination in a group.  Many of the songs and patterns are first performed through movement, a natural form of expression for all children.  This not only captures high motivation, it builds permanent memory:)
     Intermediate students in grades 3 through 5 are getting organized by setting up their folders, binders and recorder practice habits.  They have also written down their hopes and dreams for music this year.  It is helpful to know what the students are looking forward to when planning lessons.  All students need a soprano recorder which can be bought or borrowed at the school.  Please fill out and return the pink recorder form that your child takes home.  You will enhance their experience by encouraging regular practice at home.  The amount of time is less important than how often practice takes place.  Five to ten minute sessions a few times a week will ensure success in the music classroom!!
     Regardless of age or grade level, all students will experience music at Captain Isaac Paine School in a similar manner.  Each will receive opportunities to listen, move, play and sing songs that build confidence and personal responsibility within a musical ensemble.  Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children; it is a true pleasure.
