Well, classes certainly are underway and off to a running start. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and working with you and your child(ren). Please, if you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me at the school, either through email or by phone. Here are a few key points for the month of September.

Grade 8 Vocabulary
Flashcards with meaning and part of speech on the back and spelling and phonetics on the front are required for all units. At the completion of a unit, students will submit their flashcards to me so I will be able to give them back when it is time for multiple unit review evaluations. Please send in a large zip lock bag with your child's name on it for the storage of their cards.

Operation Vocab - an ongoing project that will be completed for each unit on a rotating basis, students will be responsible for creating their own exercise (completing the sentence, synonyms & antonyms, choosing the right word, or vocabulary in context) to submit on the day of the test for the unit. An answer key must be provided and the assignment follows the same format that can be found in their "Vocabulary Workshop" books.

Sentence Tests - In addition to the traditional book test that will be given, students are also responsible for writing original sentences for meaning and part of speech knowledge. Five words will be selected for this at random on the day of the test. Then, ten of the remaining fifteen words for the list will be dictated as part of a spelling evaluation. Students are encouraged to practice this format at home to help enrich their study time.

Grade 8 Book Talks
Book talks are back! Students are responsible for presenting 3 book talks each trimester. A schedule and detailed description of the assignment were distributed the the students. Book talks will not be accepted late and all presentations need to be appropriate and that of at least an 8th grade level. Any questions or concerns about the level of a book, please check with me, as inappropriate selections that were not approved will not be accepted.

Writer's Notebooks (7-8) "WNB"
Students in both 7th and 8th grades are already well underway with their first writing assignments of the year. 7th graders are working on book reviews to complement their selected authors; 8th graders are working on a three part assignment: creation of a book of leads, a creative piece to complement Chris Van Allsburg's "The Mysteries of Harris Burdick" and eventually a lead story based on a peer's book. Most of the students' writing samples will be completed in school so the steps of the writing process are clear and applicable.

Grade7 Vocabulary
Like 8th grade, flashcards with meaning and part of speech on the back and spelling and phonetics on the front are required for all units. At the completion of a unit, students will submit their flashcards to me so I will be able to give them back when it is time for multiple unit review evaluations. Please send in a large zip lock bag with your child's name on it for the storage of their cards.
Tests will be the traditional book test, along with a dictated spelling evaluation only. Enrichment assignments will be coming as we explore the next few units.

Literature (7-8)
All literature groups are well underway with either studies of the short story or fiction vs. nonfiction. Pass codes for access to the books online will be distributed soon. The website for access to the book is www.phschool.com. Please feel free to visit it once the codes are available. Students should be keeping up with daily reading/class/homework assignments and be prepared for daily literature discussions. I

Grammar (7-8)
Thus far, we have been reviewing important points in both classes. Over the course of the next few weeks, I am looking forward to rolling up our sleeves and concetnrating studies either with nouns (gr.7) or verbs (gr.8). Nightly practice will be assigned, and quizzes and tests will be given.

Religion (6-7)
The grade 6 program is rooted in the study of the Old Testament. As we explored chapter 1, students are working hard on developing their active reading and note taking skills to help bring them to a deeper understanding of the content we are studying. Once we complete chapter 2, students will take a test on chapters 1-2.
The grade 7 program focuses on the New Testament, the sacraments, and Jesus's life. Quizzes on the chapters will be given on a weekly basis. We are going to be working hard on our study of scripture over the next few weeks, as students participate in a gospel lab and written reflection on Jesus's word.

Have a great September; I can't believe it already feels like fall! Keep reading and writing:)
Mrs. Sorice
