Dear Parents and Middleschoolers,

Autumn is here!  What a beautiful ride route 295 is because of the colors of the leaves.  November is here!
Grade 6 Science:  We finished our unit on plants.  We finished reviewing for the test last week.  The unit test is on Tuesday, November 3rd.  The students have study guides ( chapter review and some dittos to study.  They only have to study what I gave them.  Our next unit we will study is animals and their behavior.  We will view the video Animals and their behavior. We wil also look at a mollusk and an earthworm which we will dissect.

Math Grade 6:  We are working on an Algebra unit.  We just completed a lab on algebraic expressions.  Next we will learn how to solve equations using pegs and balances.  They will also learn to use powers and exponents in expressions.  They will be playing expo bingo this week.

Grade 7:  The students in Grade 7 have been working very hard.  In Math we have finished going over integers.  We are taking some time to review concepts covered last year because seventh grade test scores go to the high schools next year.  Encourage your child to go to bed early this week and to eat breakfast before coming to school.  Next week the students will be divided into 2 groups based on their average and their test scores last year.  I will cover almost the same skills except at a slower pace.

Grade 7 is studying natural disasters.  We are finishing tornados and will study earthquakes next.  They are working an a project on a natural disaster.  They will present their project to the class on Wednesday, October 21st.  They will receive 2 grades on this project.  One will be for the oral presentation and the other will be for the project itself.  I will pass out the rubric for both this week.

Grade 8 is studying the periodic table. They will receive a packet with many tasks to complete.  Some of these include a timeline, graph of the elements of the body, making a periodic table, a test on the symbols of the elements, playing the element game, and making a family of elements poster.  The students will be responsible for budgeting their class time to complete the tasks.  A due date will be given once all tasks are passed out.

Grade 8 Math:  Algebra I is solving equations with variables on both sides.  They just finished a unit on solving equations.  For a project they are coming up with an algebraic model that shows how many CD's must be sold to break even.  They must also show how profit is a function of the number of CD's sold.  They must also design a sign for their store.  The project is due October 28th.

Algebra II is finishing a unit on integers and processses involving integers.  They also studied matrixes.  For a project, students must report on an endangered species.  They must show the ups and downs of the numbers of their animal.  They will be doing their oral presentation tomorrow.

                              Sincerely,
                              Mrs.  Iafrate
