January,2010
              LIBRARY AND MEDIA CENTER

Our library is such a vibrant place. There is so much to say about our library and media center. All students use these facilities.  We have 11 computers, a TV  and DVD player, a projection screen and a Smartboard. The library is filled with researchers and learners, story tellers and listeners.

Our library is decorated with snowpeople, snowflakes and books about snow and winter....fiction and non-fiction.  We are celebrating Catholic School Week from January 24th to January 29th.

Grade 3 students have their diaries on display.  They researched people who lived in the colonies.  They did reports on them in the form of a diary. They did a wonderful job.

Many of our students are reading books from the The Rhode Island Children's Book Nomination List 2010.  Many of our middle school students are presenting book talks to grades 3-5, using the RICB list.  The most popular books so far are SAVY, ELEVEN, SOMEONE NAMED EVA, PUPPY POWER AND SWINDLE.  Students in grades 3-6 will be voting for their favorite book sometime in February.

The library has many new books including,THUMP-QUACK-MOO, AMELIA BEDELIA'S FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL, THE SONG OF ST. FRANCIS, SCAT, THE PRINCE OF FENWAY PARK, ESCAPING THE GIANT WAVE.  New books for middle school students include: EVER, WAITING FOR NORMAL, DARKWING, THE TEASHOP GIRLS, WANTED, WELL WITCHED,and CHASING LINCOLN'S KILLER.

"AGENT IIM" is back in the library again this year to guide the students through the research process with topics such as elephants, puffins, cheetahs, hippos, owls and manatees.
The 7 steps of the Independent Investigation Method (IIM) are:
     1.  Topic
     2.  Goal Evaluation
     3.  Research
     4.  Organize
     5.  Goal Evaluation
     6.  Product
     7.  Presentation

The Library Lunch Bunch, a popular feature started last year, continues this year. Mrs. Dawson hosted the second Lunch Bunch November 5th. A dozen or so 7th grade students came as their favorite authors. They enjoyed good food and lively discussions.  They shared highlights and important points about the lives, writing and thoughts of the authors.

The reinforcement and practical application of curriculum subject matter is so exciting with the technology available.  Building upon higher order thinking skills we are using this technology to encourage our students to develop meaningful materials

Our 5th grade students broadcast weekly events on WSPS, the Cardinal Radio Station of St. Philip School.  Please tune in as you drive up to the school. Turn to 91.5 FM on your car radio and get all the latest school and parish news.

Fourth grade students announce the real-time weather from our weather station, housed in the library, after opening prayers.
Go to www.weatherbug.com.  Type in the zip code 02828 and real time weather for Greenville from our weather station will pop up.

Our younger students enjoy story time with Mrs. Audet.  With so many new books and old favorites to choose from students really enjoy their time in the library.
Keep checking out our library for student displays and the latest books.
