                 NOVEMBER NEWS

This is a test week (Nov. 16). So there are no new spelling words. There is no booklet due. We will have a spelling test but it will be a pre-printed review test where they need to pick out the words that are spelled incorrectly. The words are the first 10 words on these agenda pages: 31, 33,35, 39, and 41. There are no challenge words on the test. There will also be an important unit reading and writing assessment this week. There will be another timed math quiz this Friday. Today the children picked an animal of the rain forest to do research on. They will have access to the classroom computers and books to do their research. I have also told them that they could look up their animal at home, print off a sheet of information and bring it in to class to use. They have specific questions to answer which they wrote down in their science notebooks. This is a multi-step project which we will be doing over the next two weeks. We are also going to begin our in-class book report tomorrow. They are also practicing a little Thanksgiving play in the room.

We are running low on paper cups and baby wipes. We have plenty of disinfecting supplies and kleenex and computer paper. If you are able, we would appreciate paper cups and baby wipes. Thank you.

Today marks the first day of the new trimester. You will notice that the rubrics I am using from this point on will be more complex. The children are expected to do more and to take more responsibility for their work. I sent home a book order today. It will be due back by Nov. 20th. It is optional.

For religion, we are talking about special meanings for names. I am going to encourage the children to find out the meaning of their names, could be first, middle, last or all three. It will be an extra credit project. They have the month of November to do it in. As you know, we have a high incidence of sickness in this class. I am washing constantly, airing out the room, and having the children wash their hands often. Please err on the side of caution if your child is not feeling well in the morning. I am going to wash the mascots after each use to help prevent the spread of germs.

All children have been assigned a color (reading level) in SRA. They are expected to do at least 2 cards per week. This is part of their reading grade. This month, their book report is due on November 23rd. I sent home the report forms on Friday. They will also be doing a book report in class with me on a book that I will give them. Today I am sending home the forms outlining the Christmas report which will not be a specific book report. Please make sure to return this form as soon as possible as I will assign the topics based on how the papers are returned. I am also sending home the cutouts for the Thanksgiving Pilgrim or Native American child.( I decided to let the children dress them as Native Americans if they would like.) These are due for the 24th. They can be dressed in paper clothes, cloth clothes, etc. We will be writing stories and sharing them when they return later this month. We will vote on our favorites.

Please make sure that the children are practicing their math fact cards and the Act of Contrition. Many children can sucessfully do 60 addition problems to 20 in 3 minutes accurately. Some others are very close. The children will be tested on the Act of Contrition during the second week of December. The CCD Office will be sending home information regarding when the children will make their First Penance. Children in St. Philip School are given the opportunity to make their First Penance with their classmates on a school day. This has worked out very well in the past. If you decide to do this, be sure and let the CCD Office know that this is your choice when those forms go home. Report cards will go home the day before Thanksgiving. With the report cards, I will also include a page letting you know what your child is doing in SRA. When you review your child's progress, if you feel the need to meet, just let me know.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!!
