Welcome to the week of November 9:
Happy Monday!

What a wonderful weekend! I hope that all of you were able to get out for a time to enjoy the beautiful weather!

Here are our projected activities for the week:

Math: This week we will start chapter 3, Addition and Subtraction. This chapter is a review of multi-digit addition, column addition, subtraction with regrouping, and subtraction with zeros. I am hopeful that we will be able to move quickly through this chapter since it is a review of third grade skills. As always we will incorporate word problems into our daily lessons.

Social Studies: This week we will finish up our booklet on the government of RI. On Friday we will have a final test on RI including important historical events and government. The students will be bringing home their time lines and government booklets in order to study for their test.
We will all be very excited to hear the upcoming oral presentations and see the commemorative corners on the children's chosen famous Rhode Islanders. We will begin to hear the presentations on Thursday and hopefully finish them on Friday. What fun!! This will be a great learning experience for us all!

Science: Our week will start by painting our mountain posters and creating our glaciers. As the week moves along, we will be starting health. The children are responsible for the study of one unit in health each trimester. We will begin with nutrition and learn about the 6 nutrients that make up our food and keep us healthy.

Religion: The children did a wonderful job at First Friday Mass. They were reverent and respectful and I was very proud of them.
This week and next we will be learning a new program entitled, "Circle of Grace." This is a religious program learning about Internet Safety through the help of the Holy Spirit. Not only will this program be timely, but it will also be informative for the children. As you know safety is always of the utmost concern for us!

Vocabulary: On to unit 5 this week! We will be back to studying synonyms and antonyms and their regular test format will be on Friday!

Language Arts:
English/Writing: We will be continuing with compound sentences in our grammar books this week. We will also be working with this skill in vocabulary

Reading: Both groups this week and next will be independently reading "Pocahontas and the Strangers" by Clyde Robert Bulla. They will be keeping a log of facts as they read, which they eventually will turn into a factual project about Pocahontas. They will read both in school and home. Their directions for the project will be coming at the end of the week so as not to interfere with their RI project.

Orange group: The children will be reading a nonfiction selection on volcanoes. They will also be reading a fiction book on Ms. Frizzle's voyage to the volcano.  Their skills work will include graphic aids and singular and plural nouns.
Purple group: They will start their next story entitled "Seal Journey." Their skills work will include finding the main idea and corresponding details.

Just a reminder that the children's next reading log is due on Monday. Congratulations to Ethan, Sydney, and Ashley Rubiano who were our reading log winners for October. I hope they find a good book at Barnes and Nobles.

The Book Fair was last Friday and the children had a great time. What is better than a brand new book! We will have a chance to go back on Monday for any child who either forgot their money or would like to buy another book.

Thank you for sending in so many pictures of special family members who have passed away. Our "All Souls" Board is becoming quite full! Every day we say a prayer in their honor!

Finally, please remember that there is no school on Wednesday, Veteran's Day, but their RI project is due on Thursday.

Here's to another fun learning-filled week!!

Mrs. McKenna
