I hope that you all had a wonderful weekend! How lucky were we that the blizzard in the Mid-Atlantic missed us! Let's hope that our luck continues!
Here are our projected activities for this week:
Math: We are making headway into our study of long division. Many of the children did a great job on their test last week! This week we will continue with division learning about finding averages, dividing with money, and interpreting remainders. Hopefully by week's end we will study the order of operations. After vacation, we will finish chapter 5 and be ready to move on to fractions. Once again, nightly review of basic division facts would help your child greatly!
Social Studies: This week we will begin by reviewing our study of latitude and longitude, and continuing it into finding specific places on the map of the United States. We will finish the last section of the chapter which deals with the importance of the Atlantic Ocean to our region. By Thursday the children will have their study guides, since our final test on the Northeast will be on Friday. The children will need to review their states and capitals of the region for the test.
Science/Health: What a wonderful job the children did on their chapter 8 test! There were so many 4's and 5's. This week our emphasis is going to be to finish the Northeast, but if at all possible we will begin the second lesson in chapter 8. This will be a study of the water cycle. We will be needing some two-liter empty soda bottles if anyone is about to finish a bottle of soda. Sending it washed out with the cap to school would be great!
Religion: The children also did a great job on their chapter 4 religion test last week! This week we will start off with a St. Valentine project and then move into chapter 5, "Created For One Another." It is hard to believe, but we will soon be getting ready for Lent. Please return the permission slip to school, if you haven't already, concerning our trip to the Cathedral for our Mass with Bishop Tobin on March 3rd.
Vocabulary: This week we will be moving on to unit 10. As always there will be a vocabulary and spelling test on Friday.
Language Arts:
English/Writing: This week we will focus on writing a story summary about their book, "Stone Fox" or "Shoeshine Girl." Between drafting, editing, and writing in final copy this should take us all week. However, this is a skill that all the children need to know.
Reading:
Orange group: We have just finished our story entitled "Katie's Trunk." Our test on this story is scheduled for Thursday. Our reading skills this week will involve cause and effect, and primary and secondary sources.
Purple group: This group will begin their next story entitled "Leah's Pony" this week. Their skills will include cause and effect, context, and reference skills.
Both groups have a story pyramid reading project due on Friday, February 12. We will spend time sharing these on Friday.
Just a reminder that the children's next reading log is due on Monday.
Thank you to all of you who were able to send in a box of Kleenex last week! The coughs and sneezes were wide spread last week. I hope that everyone is feeling much better this week!
Here's to another learning-filled week as we get ready for February vacation!
