It is so hard to believe that we have only a week and a half before Thanksgiving! How the school year flies!
Here are our projected activities for the week:
Math: The children are doing very well with our study of chapter 3. Their addition and subtraction concepts and computations are very good! This week we will review multi-digit subtraction with regrouping and with zeros. Following that, we will be dealing with problem solving: choosing the operation. Before Thanksgiving we will be ready for our test on chapter 3.
Social Studies: The children are doing a wonderful job on their oral presentations of famous historic Rhode Islanders. Every one has been so interesting and informative, and the commemorative corners have been so creative! For a little state we have had many amazing influential people! We will finish up our presentations on Monday and then begin our study of the entire Northeast Region in our social studies book.
Science/Health: We have begun our unit in Nutrition. We are studying the 6 nutrients and how they are important to our health. We are going to focus on healthy snacks this week. How great it would be if we could all bring a healthy food for snack this week! We're going to give it a try!
Religion:We will be continuing this week with our new Internet safety program entitled, "Circle of Grace." We begin each class with a prayer to the Holy Spirit asking for His help and guidance in this new endeavor. We are going to be learning about safe and unsafe secrets this week and maintaining Internet boundaries. There will also be new vocabulary that we will be learning about in the weeks ahead.
Vocabulary: On to unit 6 this week! We will be studying synonyms and antonyms along with compound sentences, fragments, and run-ons in grammar.
Language Arts:
English/Writing: We will be finishing up with the unit on compound sentences this week and move on to fragments and run-on sentences.
We will even be writing our own Thanksgiving poem to read at the prayer service the week of Thanksgiving.
Reading: Both groups this week and next will be independently reading "Pocahontas and the Strangers" by Clyde Robert Bulla. They will be keeping a log of facts as they read, which they eventually will turn into a factual project about Pocahontas. They will read both in school and home. Their directions for the project will be coming home on Monday, along with all the materials they will need to complete it. This little reading project will be due on Friday.
Orange group: The children will be finishing a nonfiction selection on volcanoes. They will also be reading a fiction book on Ms. Frizzle's voyage to the volcano. Their skills work will include graphic aids, singular and plural nouns, and fragments. Their next reading test is scheduled for Friday this week.
Purple group: They will start their next story entitled "Seal Journey." Their skills work will include finding the main idea and corresponding details.
Just a reminder that the children's next reading log is due on Monday.
Thank you for sending in so many pictures of special family members who have passed away. Our "All Souls" Board is becoming quite full! Every day we say a prayer in their honor! We are trying to say a daily decade of the rosary for these souls, or any victims of the flu, or any personal intention that the children may have.
Finally may I ask you, if you already haven't, to print your child's name in his sweater or gym jacket. I can't tell you how many misplaced sweaters we have in the course of the week. Thanks again!!
Here's to another "fast" learning-filled week!!
