Grade 3 Weekly Schedule for Specialists:
Monday-- Art
Tuesday-- Library Skills
Wednesday--Physical Education
Thursday--Spanish and Music
Friday--Spanish and Library Circulation

1.  Religion-- This week was devoted to our "Saints Come Marching In" presentations, and the children were inspired by the lives of these holy men, and women. We will begin our new unit on the "Circle of Grace", our new Safe Environment Program for the diocesan Catholic schools.  The children will learn that God loves us so much, He gives us the area around our bodies as special and private, and others must respect those boundaries. An action plan will be taught, so children can speak up for themselves, say no, and seek help when someone violates the boundaries.

2.  Reading--This week, both reading groups will be focusing on the comprehension skills of making generalizaitons, and drawing appropriate conclusions.  The German Shepherds will enjoy the selection, Dream Wolf, and the Wolves will complete their activities for Tanya's Reunion.  All grade 3 students are working towards a "5" assessment for the SRA program this month.  The November rubric is:

     Number of Stories-------------Assessment Grade

     10 or more stories/activities------5
     8 stories/activities-------------4
     6 stories/activities-------------3
     4 stories/activities-------------2
     2 or less stories---------------1

**Students participating in reading with Mrs. Accardo or Sr. Kathy will be required to complete two less story activities (e.g. 8 stories is a 5 assessment.)

***The November book activity will involve reading the Magic Tree House, Thanksgiving on Thursday, and completing related activities.  This information, along with the books, has been distributed and children must submit their book activity by Monday, November 30.

3. Language Arts--In Writer's Workshop, we are learning how to take effective notes while researching the lifestyles of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans at Plimoth Plantation in the early 1600's.  This will help make our diaries more realistic and interesting.  There will be a spelling test on Friday (Unit 9, pg. 51) and an advanced vocabulary test (Unit 7) on Thursday.  In grammar, we will continue our unit on nouns, and will focus on learning and applying the rules to pluralize nouns.  We will review our long vowel sounds in phonics, and learn the rules for syllabication of words.

4.  Math--It's finally here--the beginning of our unit on multiplication!  We will learn about multiplication as repeated addition, do some related activities, and start with the 0,1, and 2 tables.  I have distributed flash cards for the students to borrow, and some of the children are sharing them until the rest are delivered.  Please spend at least 10 minutes a day learning the facts so your child reaches mastery quickly and does not fall behind.

5.  Science--We will be exploring the lifestyle of  the Pilgrims and Native Americans during the early 1600's. We will research and compare the Pilgrim diet, and our diet, today to see which is more nutritious.

6.  Social Studies--The children are researching the Plimoth communities to assist them in creating an interesting, realistic, Pilgrim or Wampanoag child's diary.  For map skills, we will learn how to read the symbols in a map key.

7. Handwriting--We will continue our discovery of the new cursive alphabet in our Handwriting Without Tears program. Our focus will be on correct posture, appropriate handgrip, and learning new letters k and r.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me, as we a partnership, with your child's best interests at heart!!  Have a blessed week!
