My WWJD Prayer

Walk with me today, Jesus,
in everything I do.
Keep me by Your side, Jesus,
that I may learn from you.

Be with me in the morning,
be with me through the day.
Keep Your hand upon me, please,
and bless all I do and say.

In each of my activities, Jesus,
may I always turn to You.
And in all of my decisions,
let me first ask:

What would Jesus do?

                Welcome to Pre-K!

Week of October 6, 2008

The letter of the week is Ff, the shape is the triangle, the number is six and the color is black.

Being a member of a family continues to be the theme for our religion lessons for the next several weeks.  The children will be thinking about what it means to be part of a family as well as noting the differences between families.

The focus of this week's issue of Weekly Reader is fire safety. The activities include making decisions and analyzing pictures.  There is an additional listening activity with this issue.

Wednesday the children turned their attention to pumpkins.  The pumpkins were passed from child to child giving each the opportunity to feel its weight and texture.  They used words like heavy, hard, smooth, bumpy, orange and stem to describe the uncut pumpkin.  Once it was cut the children used words like stinky, smelly, slimy, gooy, soft and orange.

Most of the children had lots of fun separating the seeds from the pulp but there were a few who just could not touch the slimy seeds. After the seeds were spread on the paper towels, each child counted his/her seeds.  There were a total of 383 seeds in that one pumpkin!

The seeds are now drying.  They will play an important role in our next unit.

The school library is now ready for Pre-K.  Each Tuesday the children will visit the library, have a story read to them by the librarian then learn a little about the library.  The class will go up in two sessions so there will only be 12 children in each group.  Pre-K students do not borrow books.

The projects for this month will include lots of cutting and gluing.  It will be more fun for you and the children if each project is a surprise.

Thursday and Friday are letter book days but will also include an introduction to Christopher Columbus.  Thursday the children will be using tempra paint.  On Friday it will be cutting and gluing.

Jacob Comes Home is our bible story. Young Christopher Columbus, Fifi and lots of Halloween books will be on our reading list this month. The children are learning several Halloween songs and a game.  Maybe they will sing for you.

Not this week but next the French Fry containers will be going up (I'll explain next week).  They were scheduled to be up this week but this is the last week before progress reports go home so there will be some assessments being done.

Thank you very much for your generous response to my "Wishing Stars".  I truly appreciate the gift card for film developing, the soil, the pumpkins, photo albums, cups, plates, spoons and the overwhelming response to my request for treasures.  Each week many children go into my treasure box so it is always in need of replenishment.  Again, thank you for being so willing to help.

Tuesday - Library and music with Mrs. Rodi
Wednesday - PE with Ms. Hand
Thursday - Music with Mrs. Rodi
Friday - PE with Ms. Hand

CHILDREN MUST WEAR SNEAKERS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE FULLY IN PE CLASS.

Please send in your child's change of clothes as soon as possible.

ODDS AND ENDS

The Thursday packet envelope MUST be returned on Friday or the first day your child returns to school after the Thursday.

The cut outs of the letter of the week are due on Thursday - in an envelope or baggy with your child's name written clearly on the front.

The class will be participating in a program sponsored by Scholastic Books which donates books to poor children.  For every book we read a needy child will receive a free book.  The chart is posted on the front board.  Just fill in one square for each book you read to your child.  When we've read 100 books, I will send it to Scholastic and our children will be recognized for their effort.

The annual Pre-K Halloween program will be held in Cafe Rocco on Friday, October 31.  We will begin at approximately 9:35 and end at approximately 9:05.

Every child will need an empty frosting container by November 18.  The container should be clean and have had the label removed.  Please include the lid.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please contact me.  You may call the school (944-2993 extension 109), ask to speak with me at dismissal or send in a note and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Friday is not a good day to ask me to stay past 3:00 as I have a standing commitment on Friday afternoons but I can usually accomodate you any other day.

Have a great week!

Mrs. Sanford
