THERE WILL BE A TEST ON FRIDAY WHICH COVERS THE ABOVE SKILLS. ALSO, CHILDREN WILL BE TESTED ON THE LIST OF SIGHT WORDS FOR UNIT ONE THROUGHOUT THE WEEK.
Reading: Continue to practice the overall Unit sight word list which was sent home for unit 1 . Once again, it is very important for your child to know all of the sight words in order to be able to learn to read more successfully. Also, practice reading nightly in order to apply reading strategies for reading unknown words.
Writing: Children will write words as they match letters with sounds (Inventive spelling). Writing, too,
will be very guided and interactive as we begin the school year.
Children are putting words together to write sentences
(express a complete thought).
We are focusing on writing a complete sentence by beginning the sentence with a capital letter and ending the sentence with a period.
Handwriting: We will be focusing on writing letters,
words and numerals using the correct
shape, size, spacing and slant as we sit
in a writing position. Correct pencil grip
is very important, too, for our beginning
writers.
Letters of focus for this week: Aa, Dd, Oo, !, ?
Math: We will study the following this week:
Addition:
Related addition facts- 3+4=7 4+3=7
Sums of 7,8 9,10 11,12
6+1=7 8+1=9 10+1=11
3+5=8 6+4=10 8+4=12
Hands-on: We will use visual aides/hands on learning to assist for a better understanding of the above listed concepts.
Social Studies: We will continue the unit on:
'Good Citizens' which stems from
what we want to be in our class-
room and community.
A LIST OF VOCABULARY WORDS FOR THIS UNIT HAS BEEN SENT HOME FOR THE CHILDREN TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THIS UNIT AND TO PREPARE FOR THE TEST (IT WILL BE ANNOUNCED).
Science: We will continue our unit on:
'Force and Motion'/ 'On the Move'
A list of vocabulary words was sent home to study to learn for the unit(to be familiar with the words).
This unit will be very interactive as the children will participate in many fun learning activities which accompany the lessons.
The children enjoyed 'measuring movement' as they moved objects and measured their distance of movement using a ruler.
Health: We will begin our unit on 'Teeth'.
The children will enjoy the fun activities
which will accompany our lessons.
Technology: We go to the technology learning center on a Friday. The lessons are very guided. The children will become familiar with using the keyboard in order to eventually type words and sentences. Also, they will learn to navigate the computer by using the mouse. At times, we visit assigned websites to further explore information we are studying in class. Please reinforce these computer skills at home with your child so that your child can become more independent while using the computer.
Also, we will be using a program called 'Kidspiration' which offers interactive lessons that incorporate what we are learning in the classroom into our computer lesson. It allows us to organize our thoughts in webs which we transfer to writing/typing sentences. It is picture-oriented, too, so the children really enjoy learning in a creative way! The children will be excited about this!
Homework will focus on phonics and math skills this week and there will be a reading assignment on Tuesday evening. For the reading assignment, your child will read the assigned story and write about it to express an understanding for it. Please include examples from the story in the writing.
Have a great week!
