       This week, we are continuing Chapter 12 on Surface Area and Volume.

Note: In each lesson, students are to work all even problems or teacher's discretion.

READING-12/13 B

We have finished our play and will complete the unit this week.
ESSENTIAL UNIT 6 (E06)

(Drama/ Publicity)
(July 2007)

Unit Statement:  In this Unit the student will read and analyze a play, skit or sketch.  The student will also participate in a performance component for a play or a reader’s theatre production. For this performance outcome, a student may also be involved in support of productions in roles such as: stage crew, costume makers or creating backdrops. There is one selective outcome in drama as well (S06).  

    Essential Outcomes:

1.    The Student Will read and discuss a play, skit or sketch.

2.    TSW describe and explain the importance of the conflict in the drama.

3.    TSW identify the main theme and explain how it is supported by incidents in the drama.

4.    TSW read or perform aloud in front of an audience. (Required oral component)

5.    TSW participate in a performance of a play, skit, sketch or Reader’s Theatre.  This performance may be acting, reading dramatically or performing a support task such as: stage crew, directing, creating backdrops or other important functions.

6.    TSW create and publicize a program or poster for a drama that incorporates ideas or characters from the drama and creates interest in the drama.

Practiced/ Ongoing Skills:

7.    TSW identify and define selected vocabulary from the drama.

Suggested Strategies and Assessments:
    
Have students:
•    analyze the drama by:
o    discussing the parts of a play with the class
o    writing an essay describing given parts of a story
o    showing understanding by acting out a scene

•    demonstrate mastery of performance by:
o    Dramatic reading
o    Acting out a part in a drama
o    Participating in a stage crew, directing or other support function
o    Creating backdrops, scenery or programs for the play

•    perform an oral presentation, either reading dramatically or acting. (required oral component)

•    make a program or poster supporting a drama.

•    write a skit or sketch that portrays one or more of the success orientations.  (Success Orientation Component).

•    perform a drama or Reader’s Theatre with other students. (Group Interaction/ Concern for Others)

•    write and act out a script.

•    create a backdrop for a play.


LANGUAGE ARTS 12/13 B

ESSENTIAL UNIT 5 (E05)

(The Report /commas, semi-colons, colons)
(July 2007)

Unit Statement: In this Unit the student will research and write a Report. This unit is meant to be engaged simultaneously with Reading 12/13 B E05 Research. Teachers may also wish to engage the students in S06 (Report II) if he/she wishes to do a longer report or believes that more time would be necessary for this report.  The student will continue to use the Writing Process and be assessed by the 6+1 Traits.  The grammar focus for this unit is commas, semi-colons and colons.  Teachers are advised to review S01 before beginning this unit.

Essential Outcomes:

1.    The Student Will use The Writing Process to research and write a Report.

2.    TSW include citations (MLA format) in his/her report.

3.    TSW prepare a Works Cited page (MLA format) for his/her report.

4.    TSW demonstrate mastery of note taking to avoid plagiarism (see plagiarism under Trustworthiness in Success Orientations).

5.    TSW prepare and present an Oral Report and give a summary of his/her report to the class.

6.    TSW thoughtfully revise and assess his/her own Report using the 6+1 Traits.

7.    TSW thoughtfully revise and assess the Report of another classmate using the 6 + 1 Traits.

8.    TSW identify and practice proper use of commas, semi-colons and colons.

9.    TSW define, identify and use transitions in his/her work.

Practiced/ Ongoing Skills:

10.    TSW use a thesaurus, dictionary or other source to improve personal vocabulary during the editing portion of The Writing Process.

11.    TSW identify and correct any spelling errors discovered during the proofreading portion of The Writing Process.

•    write his/her report on a topic that will also assist his/her learning in a class such as Science or Cultural Studies. (Cross-curricular connection)

•    present an oral report.

•    take a quiz or test or otherwise demonstrate mastery of the usage of commas, semi-colons and colons.

ESSENTIAL UNIT 6 (E06)

(Scripts and Dialogue /quotations, italics and underlining)
(July 2007)

Unit Statement: In this Unit the student will get practice in writing scripts and other dialogue.  The student will continue to use the Writing Process and be assessed by the 6+1 Traits.  The grammar focus for this unit is quotations, italics and underlining.  Teachers are advised to review SO1 before beginning this unit.

Essential Outcomes:

1.    The Student Will use The Writing Process to write an original script.

2.    TSW write a paragraph or story that includes several excerpts of dialogue correctly using quotation marks.

3.    TSW change a scene from a story or novel to a dialogue.

4.    TSW participate in reading or reciting a dialogue aloud (Required Oral Component).

5.    TSW read and discuss other published scripts that use proper formatting.

6.    TSW identify and practice proper use of quotations, italics and underlining.

Practiced/ Ongoing Skills:

7.    TSW use a thesaurus, dictionary or other source to improve personal vocabulary during the editing portion of The Writing Process.

8.    TSW identify and correct any spelling errors discovered during the proofreading portion of The Writing Process.

READING-12/13 B

ESSENTIAL UNIT 5 (E05)

(Researching Cultural Studies/ Citations)
(July 2007)

Unit Statement:  In this Unit the students will research for Cultural Studies.  It is recommended that students work on and get credit for this in both Reading and Science. The research may be directed toward a report (as in Language Arts Unit 5) or appear as articles or even tables or other more simple ways of displaying the information learned. The emphasis is on gathering information, taking notes and writing citations in proper (MLA) format. Ideally topics will recommended by the Cultural Studies teacher for either regular or extra credit in that class as well. This unit may be engaged in connection with Language Arts 12/13 B Unit 5.

    Essential Outcomes:

1.    The Student Will locate, select and record appropriate sources for his/her report in a Works Cited Page (EVALUATE).

2.    TSW read and take notes on a Cultural Studies related topic (Cross-curricular connection).

3.    TSW keep all notes in a neat and organized manner.

4.    TSW demonstrate correct citation skills.

5.    TSW demonstrate summarizing skills (CLARIFY).

6.    TSW apply skim-reading skills by taking advantage of headings and/or topic sentences.

Practiced/ Ongoing Skills:

7.    TSW identify and define selected vocabulary from the research.
