Feb 2-8th ** Study for Economics Test. The test will be Monday, February 9th. Students have 2 study guides. One study guide has concepts for them to be familiar with and the other has vocabulary to study and learn. Most of this is review but parts are new. Please study with your child :)
New Item** Most weeks students will have 4-6 geography words to learn as they work on their DOG. On the day that their DOG is due (either Thursday or Friday) students will take a short quiz over the words they studied. I have found that in the past students were doing their DOG and they didn't understand all the words they encountered and therefore struggled with the assignment. My goal is for students content vocabulary to grow so they can better understand the geography concepts presented each week. These quizzes will get averaged in with other quizzes and tests and will count towards 20% of their final grade.
In fourth grade social studies your child will be learning about the following topics:
Geography of the USA (learn through DOG and regions study)
Geography and map skills (learn through DOG)
Current events and reading the news (learn throughout the year)
US Government, especially the election process
Economics
Regions of the USA
Maine history, geography and economy
Each work you child will have a new geography skill to work on. We introduce the skill on Monday or Tuesday and students have the week to practice the skill on their Daily Oral Geography (DOG). DOG is graded and counts for 35% of your child's final grade in social studies. Students are able to see me during class or study hall with any questions regarding their DOG topic of the week.
This year we are trying to incooporate literacy and reading in social studies more than we ever have. It is important for students to be able to read a variety of genres and information well. If you come visit our classroom you will see a word wall, student notebooks of vocabulary words and journaling, the Bangor Daily Newspaper and Time for Kids magazines. Also there are many books on social studies topics in the classroom, many of which we will read this year, either as a class, in a small group or with a partner. Please encourage your child to read their Time for Kids each week. Reading this news magazine also counts towards the 100 minutes needed each week for their reading log.
Remember to check PowerSchool to see what assignments your child has coming up. I update PowerSchool regularly. You can also see what grades your child has received in all subjects as well as comments from each of the teachers, course descriptions and assignment details.
If you have any questions at all please feel free to email me through this website or call me at the school. I am more than happy to answer any questions you might have or assist in any way.
