+ JUST DO MATH +

So, Why Should You Study Math?

"Mathematics and math-related careers are consistently rated among the top five best careers. Actuaries and statisticians are in demand in business, government and industry, while an increasing number of businesses and organizations rely on mathematical modeling to solve their most perplexing problems. A severe shortage of qualified K-12 math teachers makes education a good career choice, and math grads are sought after for graduate and professional programs."

- American College Research

~ Mr. Coughlin's Math Problem Solving Plan ~

This plan was developed to assist all students with word problems. It gives them a
starting point and a method for analyzing the given information.
This plan works well with CAPT type question and other multistep/multiquestion problems .
~ rsc

1. Identify the facts/define variables.

2. Identify the question(s).

3. Draw a picture.

4. Identify a strategy for solving the problem.

5. Solve the problem and answer the identified question(s).

6. Check your work for accuracy.

7. Justify your reasoning and explain your answer(s).

Messages from Mr. Coughlin will be posted here(i.e., formula, special notices et al.)

  • We will be writing equations that will contain the following facts: a rate of change, a starting amount, and a total. The equations will be in the form: y = mx + b
  • total = rate of change (unknown) + starting amount
  • Here is an example of a graph of a line with the following facts:
  • starting amount = 2 rate of change = -(2/3)

Mission Statement
Knowledge of mathematics is essential to be a productive member of a technological society.
It is the mission of South Windsor Public Schools to provide a mathematics curriculum that
will encourage students to shape information into knowledge and experience into understanding.
Philosophy
Students learn mathematics best by doing mathematics. It is the role of the teacher to guide
students in constructing their own mathematical understanding. Teachers will implement curriculum
and plan activities that will guide and support students as they investigate, analyze and achieve.
As a result of this guidance, students will develop an appreciation of the value of mathematics,
gain onfidence in their ability to use mathematics, and become mathematical problem solvers. All
students are expected to master mathematics according to their greatest potential.

"All your life... you've been waiting for your chance, where you'll fit into the plan...
but your the master of your own destiny... so give and take the best that you can........"
