Centers: PlayDoh, searching for black & white "mice" in multi-colored pompoms, foam blocks, toys, ABC magnets, Magna Doodles, sand, cars, puzzles, dry erase boards, Velcro food, Flubber, sorting pompoms with tweezers, packing lunches in dramatic play, coloring, moon sand, computer, feeding animals, trucks, rolling dice and adding that quantity of portions to a honeycomb pattern, sand table, PlayDoh w/insect impressions, hammering, Insect Memory, making butterflies with PlayDoh, housekeeping dramatic play, foam putty, using tweezers to count red pompom "ladybugs" onto numbered flowers, Ants in the Pants, shaving cream, brick blocks, small builders, rice with insects in the sensory table, insect fingerpuppets, matching ladybug letters to uppercase feltboard letters, Mega Blocks, Sound BINGO, and beads

Projects: making a mouse and writing about what would happen if we took a mouse to school, sponge painting palm trees, watercoloring backpacks, writing about our favorite colors, caterpillars on leaves, crinkled butterflies, large dotpaint insects, easel painting insects, and dotpainting numbered insects by rolling and counting dice

Lessons & Activities: In September our lessons and activities will focus on getting to know our classroom and peers, so we will do a lot of turn taking and listening activites and lessons.  We will be passing an Elmo laughing tomato, passing beanie animals to music, rolling balls to friends around the circle, following directions with beanbags, Cooperative Musical Chairs, listening to clues to figure out what object is described, cooperative parachute activities, learning about types of insects, making "dirt" w/insects in it for snack, bug patterns, insect matching to shadows, counting ants onto numbered picnic baskets, Doggie Doggie Where's Your Bone game, virtual fieldtrip about insects, number BINGO, following prepositional directions with colored insects, Bug in the Rug game, making spiders for snack, voting and graphing our favorite insects, counting bees on number flowers, insect Simon Says, and following prepositional directions with numbered insects

Examples of curricular alignment:

  • Cognitive: voting and graphing favorite insects, sorting pompom "mice" by color, Insect Memory
  • Personal and Social: lunchbox dramatic play, Cooperative Musical Chairs, fingerpuppets
  • Language: writing about bringing a mouse to school, Doggie Doggie Where's Your Bone, following prepositional directions with insects
  • Fine Motor: hammering, cutting Velcro food, crinkled butterflies art project
  • Gross Motor: cooperative parachute activity, Simon Says, rolling ball around circle
  • Sensory Processing: foam putty, moon sand, fingerplays and movement songs
  • Adaptive: Students work on self-help skills throughout daily activities, such as hand washing, hanging up their backpacks and getting their folders out, putting on coats, and following safety rules on the playground.
  • Creative/Aesthetic: building with Mega Blocks, easel painting insects, coloring

Rules:  Classroom Rules - Walking Feet, Be Friendly, Good Listening, and Inside Voices; Circle Time Rules - Sit Criss-Cross, Hand in your Lap, Quiet Mouth, and Good Listening

Curriculum: Focused on Cognitive, Language, Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Adaptive (independence/self-help), Personal & Social/Behavioral, Creative Expression/Aesthetic, and Sensory Processing Development using the CT Preschool Curricular Goals and Benchmarks (see attachment at bottom of page).

Reminders

  • On typical school days, AM arrival is 9:05am, and dismissal is 11:50am.
  • On typical school days, PM arrival is 12:55pm, and dismissal is 3:40pm.
  • On conference days, AM arrival time is 9:05am, and dismissal is at 11:10am.  PM arrival time is 11:10am, and dismissal is at 1:15pm.
  • On abbreviated days, AM arrival time is 9:05am, and dismissal is at 11:05am.  PM arrival is 11:05am, and dismissal time is 1:35pm.
  • It is parents' responsibility to listen or watch for school cancellations, delays, and early dismissals.  In the case of a 90-minute delay, AM POP is cancelled and PM POP starts at the regular time.  In the case of an early dismissal, AM POP dismisses at 11:05am and PM POP is cancelled.
  • Each child needs a regular-size backpack, a folder with pockets and labeled with their name, and an extra set of clothes to keep at school.
  • Remember your monthly Scholastic book orders!  Each student purchase provides points used to purchase classroom literacy materials.
  • To contact staff call 648-5020 and enter their extension or last name.  My extension is x1412.  Leave a message and your call will be returned as soon as possible.
  • I can also be contacted through email using the email address provided in students' first day packets, as well as using the link at the top of this webpage.
  • For emergencies or information that must be received immediately, call 648-5020 and enter the office extension when prompted by the phone system.  A message can be left directly with office staff in these situations.
  • To report an absence, call 648-5020 and enter the absence extension when prompted by the phone system.  It is not necessary to also report the absence to the teacher or office staff.  Upon returning to school, students must bring a written reason for their absence.  Also call First Student to cancel transportation that day for students who ride the bus (528-2234).
