September, 2007

Hello all,

Welcome 9th graders.  This year will certainly be an eventful one for you.  There are so many changes that you will experience during your transition from middle school into high school.  Together, we can work hard to make it a smooth and enjoyable one.  Global Studies is an exciting course that will introduce you to many cultures throughout the world.  You will learn about the geography of each region we study as well as the history behind each region.  Economic, political, and social characteristics of each area will also be of great importance to our studies.  We will explore the traditions and origins of world religions.  The topic of religion is of great importance in our ever changing world today and will help you to better understand several of the major conflicts that are currently happening around the world, particularly in the Middle East.  We will discuss the status of people throughout the world focusing on age, class, gender, race, ethnicity, and wealth as discussion topics.  Finally, we will identify and explore major challenges facing the world today.  I hope you all enjoy this material as much as I do.

Sophomores, welcome back!  I am very excited to be teaching Civics this year and hope that you will enjoy the subject as much as I do.  I believe that there is nothing more important then to be a good and active citizen.  I am excited to teach you all about our great nation, how our government was developed, and how a democracy works.  We will discuss the Bill of Rights and the Constitution at great length.  This class will be challenging, but very rewarding.  As you all know, you will be taking the CAPT test this year.  Together with time, hard work, lots of patience as well as tons of practice, you will all excel.  We will work on the writing portion of the exam at least once per cycle, probably more.  You will become such experts that the actual exam will be a piece of cake!  I am very excited to work with each and every one of you.

Welcome All!

Sincerely,

Marisa Hamelin

P.S. Just to avoid confusion I wanted to let you all know that I got married in October so from now on I will be Mrs. O'Brien.
