Welcome to the School Notes Page of the Special Education Department!

Spring is here!
May is a busy month.  Several classes have various field trips and the end of the year assessments will be completed this month.  We have 2 early dismissal days- on May 1st and May 22nd.  On May 21st we are having our "Stories at Sunset" event from 6PM-8PM.  There will be reading based activities and a guest storyteller.  

SUMMER SCHOOL will be held this year from July 7th through August 1st from 9AM-12PM.  Please call if you have any questions.

The following are some helpful ideas when working with your child at home.

Focus area- Homework
Homework can be a difficult event at home.  The following are some recommendations to achieve success.
      -Set a regular time/routine
      -Choose a regular quiet place with lots of light,
       supplies nearby
      -Remove all distractions
      -Be available to help you child
      -Look over completed assignments
      -Monitor television viewing

Focus area:  Writing.
Many students have a difficult time writing.  The following are some suggestions to promote writing taken from the "Misunderstood Minds" series on PBS.

1.  Create a safe writing evironment.
2.  Make sure the directions are clear.
3.  Evaluate mechanics and content seperately.
4.  Free write.
5.  Vary writing activities.
6.  Provide enough time.
7.  Allow time for editing and revising.

It is important for students to remember that we all have strengths and weaknesses.  Writing may not be an easy task.  Writing is a process and it is necessary to edit and revise to continuously improve a written piece.
