The Fourth Grade Class and The Music Company enrichment group at EHGEMS have been working hard, learning their singing, instrumental, and speaking parts for this year’s musical called “ We’re Making Music” The musical focuses on the importance of music in our lives.
You are invited to see the performance on Thursday, April 9th, in the All Purpose Room. Parents are encouraged to attend one of the two performances scheduled at 10am and 2pm.
Because of limited seating in the All Purpose Room, children in grades K am,
1 & 2, will attend the10 am performance, and K pm, 3, & 5 will attend the 2 pm performance. Fourth Grade and Enrichment parents should select the performance time that best accommodates their schedules. The program will last approximately 45 minutes.
The Music Company
The Music Company (4th/5th grade music enrichment group) after-school rehearsal is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, 2009 from 1:30pm-3:00 pm in the All Purpose Room. Because this rehearsal takes place during early dismissal week, parents of students participating in The Music Company should plan on making transportation arrangements for their children (pick up) at 3:00pm. Parents of participating students may want to consider scheduling their teacher conference during this time. Children will be dismissed at 3:00pm. Parents should plan on meeting the children after rehearsal in the school foyer (outside of the office) area, promptly at 3:00pm. Please e-mail or call Mrs. Hickel if you have any questions or concerns.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to the following 5th graders: Benny McGowan in 5Mo, and Nick Serrambana in 5W, for winning the Grammy Award contest last month. Students in both 5th grade classes selected their choices for the Grammy Awards in music class, and Benny, Nick, Andrew Cordova, Kris Channa and Keith Poittier had picked the most winners. A drawing determined the prize winners. Each winner received a copy of the 2009 Grammy Awards 2009 CD, which includes a collection of nominated songs. A portion of the CD’s proceeds support music education programs in the schools.
Dear Third Grade Parents,
What a joy it has been getting to know your children and teach them music again this year! There has been a tradition of learning to play the recorder in 3rd grade music class, and I would love to continue it! Of course that means all students will need to purchase a soprano recorder (12 inch plastic instrument, not a toy look-alike!) if they do not already own one. Yamaha recorders can be purchased at school from DuBaldo Music Center for five dollars and fifty cents ($5.50) each.
If you wish to purchase one, please check the first line below, and kindly enclose cash or check payment in the amount of $5.50 in a sealed envelope. Checks should be made out to “DuBaldo Music”. If you already own a soprano recorder, great! Please check the second box :o)
I would like all students to return the completed form below by Friday, November 7th. Please remember to write your complete name and to circle your class. I will collect completed forms and payments in labeled, sealed envelopes on music day
(3B- Wednesdays or 3R- Thursdays) starting next week, or children may leave them in my mailbox in the front office on any other day.
Please feel free to contact me at school (622-5400) or e-mail: dhickel@ehgems.crec.org should you have any questions. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Debbie Hickel

WELCOME TO THE NEW 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR!
It's great to see all my 'old' friends and meet my 'new' friends at EHGEMS in music class!
My wish for this school year, is that it be filled with joy! Joy in learning music, joy in performing music, joy in listening to and creating music!
During the next few weeks, students in all grades will be learning a silly tune called the Whacky Song , adding percussion accompaniments on instruments including Boomwhackers.
We will begin to learn new rhythm and tonal pattern syllables which will develop music literacy skills at all learning levels. Children in Grades 1 through 5 receive 40 minutes of music instruction per week while Kindergarteners meet once a week for 30 minutes.
Kindergarteners will learn about the difference between their speaking and singing voices. They learn to 'find' their singing voice if they haven't already. They also try hard to remember where they sit (assigned seat) in our singing circle!
During September, I also review music behavior expectations in the old favorite, The Rule Song, where children use both singing and speaking voices, to remind them how to make good behavior choices in class. Once the song is sung and spoken in correct rhythm and tonal patterns, we start adding percussion accompaniment and movement.
This song is important for several reasons. First, it provides all students with the opportunity to sing, play instruments and move to the music at the opening of each class. Students, particularly in grades K-5, learn by doing. Singing, playing instruments, moving to music, and creating music enable them to acquire musical skills and knowledge that can be developed in no other way.
Secondly, it also ‘reminds’ students of behavioral expectations during music time. Behavior grades are based on these 5 rules which we perform as our opening song in each music lesson:
THE RULE SONG
To get along with all my friends and Mrs. Hickel too, when I come to music class, five things I must do:
1) Follow directions, the first time they’re given!
2) Raise your hand, and wait to be called!
3) Keep your hands and feet and your mouth to yourself!
4) Participate – that means join in the fun!
5) Play the instruments only when told!
I look forward to another year of learning and creating music with your children! Please feel free to contact me at school, should you have any questions or concerns.
I teach music on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in Room 19. I can be reached at (860) 622-5400 on those days or by email: dhickel@crec.org.
