The Fourth Grade Class and The Music Company (music enrichment group) cordially invite you to the spring musical performance of “A World of Music.” The program is a celebration of our universal language….music!
Students in fourth grade were invited to audition for special solo performances. The following students have been selected to perform and represent music from around the world: Mai Vestegaard, violin (Hungary); Maddie Kean: dance (Latin America); Benny McGowan: piano (Germany), Nick Serrambana: piano (Spain); Mikayla MacClain and Ashley Houghtaling: dance (Russia). Also included will be an African piece on recorders by members of The Music Company. The Music Company members are 4th and 5th graders including: Jordan Ingham, Victoria Boyd, Kwame Adzenyah, Katherine Palomino, Kyra Nordland, Grace Alexander, Ashley Houghtaling, Michael Brunette, Kaitlyn Rasmussen, Mikayla MacClain, Emma Chadwick, Avery Campbell, Maddie Kean, Danielle Paradis, Eugenia Weaver, Hannah Jackson, Sydney Cendana and Josyah Howard.
This year, the Japanese and Music Department have worked together to combine music and poetry from around the world. Poetry recitations by children representing EHGEMS at the annual Colt Rhyme Celebration under the direction of Mrs. Nobuko Tsuji include: Grace Alexander, Alyssa Garcia, Emily Gunter, Kyra Nordlund, Eugenia Weaver, Hannah Jackson, Kaelie Murray-Simmons, Danielle Paradis, Zoe Szolomayer, Mai Verstergaard and Emma Watts. They will perform tongue twisters in Japanese, and poetry in Italian, Hungarian and Spanish. The 4th grade class will also perform a traditional Japanese folk song “Sakura”.
This year, we are also excited to have Mrs. Laurie Gardner volunteer to coordinate and assist parents in selecting authentic clothing from around the world for children to wear during the performance(s).
You are invited to see the performance on Thursday, April 10th, in the All Purpose Room. Parents are encouraged to attend one of the two performances scheduled at 10 am or 2 pm. Due to limited seating, children in grades K am, 1&2, will attend the 10:00 am performance. Children in grades K pm, 3&5, will attend the 2:00pm performance. We look forward to performing for you!

Dear Parents and Music Company Students,
We are preparing for the Spring musical “A World of Music: A Celebration of Our Universal Language” that will feature the 4th Grade class. Students in The Music Company will also participate in the program by announcing introductions for the songs being performed, playing recorder, and singing on Thursday, April 10th. Parents are invited to attend either the 10am performance or the 2pm performance (due to space limitations).
We would also like to have the students in The Music Company to remain after school with us on Wednesday, April 2, to rehearse in the All Purpose Room from 1:30pm – 3:00pm. Because we have early dismissal that week, it is imperative that parents make alternative transportation plans for 3:00pm pick-up after rehearsal, since there will be NO regular school bus service at 3:30pm.
We would suggest sending an adult to the foyer area outside of the All Purpose Room as a designated meeting place for pick up at 3 pm. (Parents may want to consider scheduling their parent/teacher conference on this particular afternoon).
Kindly sign and return the slip below so that we can confirm you have made necessary arrangements and that your child will be attending this important rehearsal. Please feel free to contact either Mrs. Hickel or Mrs. Vestergaard at school (622-5400) should you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you!
Mrs. Hickel

Music News...'A World of Music' Spring Music Program!
Each year at EHGEMS, the Fourth Grade class and music enrichment group present a musical program in the spring. This year, we are thrilled to be presenting, “A World of Music” on Thursday, April 10th! As the name implies, students will be singing and playing music from different countries.
This year, Mrs. Laurie Gardner, has taken on the task to help coordinate costumes the fourth graders will wear (in authentic attire) representing countries from all over the world!
Each fourth grader (and their parents), should start thinking about a country they would like to represent in the program (you could represent your own family heritage or any other country that you would like!). Costumes should be simple…children will be performing on risers on stage. Nothing too elaborate or heavy…it gets hot when the lights above are on! Please keep hats/head gear to a minimum…we want to see the other children performing behind you!
If you are having difficulty coming up with an idea for a simple costume or if you have an authentic outfit that you would like to lend to a child in 4th grade for their performance, please see or call Mrs. Laurie Gardner at school (622-5400) or contact her through e-mail (any questions or costume offers) at lgardner@crec.org.
All costumes will be needed by Wednesday, April 2nd, and will be promptly returned after the last performance on Thursday, April 10th. When sending your child’s costume to school, please hang all costume pieces on one hanger, labeled with your child’s name and class (4G or 4S). We will be collecting completed costumes in (late) March, and storing them in a secure location at school. Everyone’s costume should be turned in to Mrs. Gardner, a week before our dress rehearsal (conference week, by April 2, the latest), so that necessary adjustments can be made if needed. All 4th graders should plan on wearing their outfit for our dress rehearsal on Wednesday, April, 8th.
Please contact Mrs. Gardner if you have any questions.
DECEMBER ANNOUNCEMENT!
SHARE YOUR TALENT IN MUSIC WEEK (December 12, 13 & 14)
All students in Grades 1 through 5 are invited to perform for their classmates during music class the week of Conferences (Wednesday 12/12/07 through Friday 12/14/07)!
Students often beg to share what they are learning in private lessons on the piano, violin or guitar, or they would like to share a dance they are learning in dance class, or 'show' an instrument they have at home...and there is no time left in music class...
Well this week is for just for you!
Performances are casual and kid friendly...no stress!
You can perform, or bring something in for show and tell (that is related to music)
Hand out reminders will be distributed in music class this week of December 5th.
Third Grade Recorder Reminder!
This is a gentle reminder to all third graders that money and forms are due to Mrs. Hickel by December 1.

Dear Third Grade Parents,
What a joy it has been getting to know your children and teach them music again this year! There has been a tradition of learning to play the recorder in 3rd grade music class, and I would love to continue it! Of course that means all students will need to purchase a soprano recorder (12 inch plastic instrument) if they do not already own one. Yamaha recorders can be purchased at school from DuBaldo Music Center for five dollars and fifty cents ($5.50) each.
If you wish to purchase one, please check the first line below, and kindly enclose cash or check payment in the amount of $5.50. Checks should be made out to “DuBaldo Music”. If you already own a soprano recorder, great! Please check the second box :o)
I would like all students to return the completed form below by Friday, November 30th. Please remember to write your complete name and to circle your class. I will collect completed forms and payments on music day (3B- Wednesdays or 3R- Fridays) starting next week, or children may leave them in my mailbox in the front office on any other day.
Please feel free to contact me at school (622-5400) or e-mail: dhickel@ehgems.crec.org should you have any questions. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Debbie Hickel

WELCOME TO THE NEW 2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR!
It's great to see all my 'old' friends and meet my 'new' friends at EHGEMS in music class!
During the next few weeks, students in all grades will be learning the song "Make New Friends", adding percussion accompaniments and singing the song in round form.
We will also spend time learning patriotic music and will play the musical game The Singing Bee, to see how well you remember the words to old favorites like: You're A Grand Old Flag, America, America The Beautiful, The Star Spangled Banner, and This Land Is Your Land. Start practicing!
We are beginning to learn new rhythm and tonal pattern syllables which will develop music literacy skills at all learning levels. Children in Grades 1 through 5 receive 40 minutes of music instruction per week while Kindergarteners meet once a week for 30 minutes.
Kindergarteners will learn about the difference between their speaking and singing voices. They learn to 'find' their singing voice if they haven't already. They also try hard to remember where they sit (assigned seat) in our singing circle!
During September, I also review music behavior expectations in the old favorite, The Rule Song, where children use both singing and speaking voices, to remind them how to make good behavior choices in class. Once the song is sung and spoken in correct rhythm and tonal patterns, we start adding percussion accompaniment and movement.
This song is important for several reasons. First, it provides all students with the opportunity to sing, play instruments and move to the music at the opening of each class. Performing, creating and responding to music are the fundamental music processes in which humans engage. Students, particularly in grades K-5, learn by doing. Singing, playing instruments, moving to music, and creating music enable them to acquire musical skills and knowledge that can be developed in no other way.
Secondly, it also ‘reminds’ students of behavioral expectations during music time. Behavior grades are based on these 5 rules which we perform as our opening song in each music lesson:
THE RULE SONG
To get along with all my friends and Mrs. Hickel too, when I come to music class, five things I must do:
1) Follow directions, the first time they’re given!
2) Raise your hand, and wait to be called!
3) Keep your hands and feet and your mouth to yourself!
4) Participate – that means join in the fun!
5) Play the instruments only when told!
I look forward to another year of learning and creating music with your children! Please feel free to contact me at school, should you have any questions or concerns.
I teach music on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in Room 19. I can be reached at (860) 622-5400 on those days or by email: dhickel@crec.org.
