Ms. Greenhalgh’s Health Class
Rules and Expectations! 2007-2008 School Year

Health class at Ellis Tech is designed to cover such topics as nutrition, exercise, drugs and alcohol, wellness, hygiene, first aid, and sexual education. The subjects we will discuss are practical and important for overall health and happiness in life. Everything might not pertain to you now but will affect all of you sometime in the future. I feel strongly about what I teach and how valuable the information is and I hope you carry it with you through your lifetime!

Through the course of the year, we will engage in class work that is both individual and with groups, as well as doing homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. At least one project will be given each marking period. This is one way for you to become accustomed to finding information on your own. The Internet is a very useful tool for all work involved with health. Work may be given that requires Internet use and please remember that there are many computers available to you at school both in the library and Guidance.

BEHAVIOR ENTERING THE CLASS: When the bell rings, you should be in your seat. You will not be allowed to leave class because you are unprepared. Homework will be checked at the same time so have it out and ready!

BEHAVIOR LEAVING THE CLASS: Be sure you have any assigned work written down. Please wait for me to finish before leaving. If you miss an assignment that was given, you are responsible for getting it so wait to be dismissed!

HANDING IN COMPLETED WORK: All work assigned will have a due date. Please hand it in on time!! If you do not hand in the work at the time it is due (beginning of the class) 10 points will automatically be deducted from your grade. 2 additional points will be deducted for each day until the work is handed in.

LAV / DRINK PASS: Even though we are very close to the bathrooms, you must still COMPLETELY fill out your agenda before leaving the room (date, time, and destination). If you do not have an agenda and ID, you may not leave. Only one student may leave the room at a time.

ABSENCES: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to ask me what you missed so that you can make it up. Missed assignments are due 2 days after your return to school. If it is a quiz or test that you missed, you must at least speak with me with in the two-day period in order to schedule a make up time.

I will make every effort to maintain a current page on schoolnotes.com. Rubrics for all projects will definitely be on the site. Be familiar with the website because it is a great resource! We also have a new website for health and PE that has many resources about the department and the courses: www.cttech.org/healthpe/

Projects will be assigned each marking period and will be based on the topic we are discussing. I want each of you to be able to obtain health information on your own and projects are a great way to accomplish that. Many times the projects will be presented so your information can be shared with the class. Please give your projects lots of effort and thought for they are worth a lot of points!
GRADING POLICY:
Homework: 10%
    Class work and participation: 10%
    Quizzes: 20%
    Tests: 30%
    Projects: 30%
(Final exams are not given in health class.)

EXTRA HELP: If you need any assistance with an assignment or preparing for a project or test, please contact me. I am available through email or on the telephone. I check my schools email address at home if there are any concerns after I leave school. I am also willing to stay after school if you need extra help. Please speak to me in advance to set up a time and date.

EXTRA CREDIT: I will accept any extra credit you would like to do. Many students have chosen to do research and made posters, pamphlets, and wrote papers. As long as it is based on a CURRENT health topic, I will accept the work. All extra credit MUST be handed in one week prior to the last day of the marking period.
Please remember: extra credit is meant to supplement your grade. You must complete the work assigned if you wish to have a passing grade. If you do not do homework and projects then try to pass with extra credit, you will not pass!

MORE CLASS RULES:
1.    Hats, book bags, and jackets are not allowed in the classroom.
2.    If you want to leave the room for any reason, bring your agenda and ID to class!
3.    Respect personal property (yours, mine, and everyone else’s)
4.    Keep all objects and body parts to yourself.
5.    Be respectful and polite at all times.
6.    Behave appropriately as high school students should. If you choose not to, you will receive a warning at first. If it continues, you will serve a detention with me after school and I will make a call home. If it still continues, you will be asked to go to the office.

Parents and students should feel free to contact me anytime. Email is the easiest for me to respond and continue communication with parents. Students may email assignments to me as attachments to my school address. I am at school each day until at least 3:30. I will check voice mails and emails before leaving.

I look forward to another productive and fun year!!
