Level C – 75 points - Read one book and complete one of the following options:
Reading Log – Complete the Reading Log Pages (Before Reading, 10 Silent Reading Record entries, and After Reading). You must complete all of the Reading Log Pages in order to receive 75 points. Incomplete Reading Logs will result in a loss of 10 points per missing/incomplete page.
Reading Journal – Complete 10 journal entries as you are reading your book. Use the pages provided by your teacher. You must also complete a Before Reading and After Reading Page.
Approach Paper – Complete an approach paper following the guidelines established on the “Directions for an Approach Paper” handout. You must also complete a Before Reading and After Reading Page.
Book Report – Complete a standard essay format book report using the “Directions for a Book Report” handout. You must also complete a Before Reading and After Reading Page.
All handouts for this portion of the project are available at all times within the classroom. Handouts will be located on the stackable units on the white bookshelf next to the crib.
Level B and Level A – To get a “B” complete one assignment, to get an “A” complete 2 assignments.
1. Create a timeline of the important events in the book. Be sure to list all major events from the story (You must include at least 10 events). Write a brief (2-3 sentences) description of each event. Consider using the 5W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why). Use pictures, drawings, quotations, and stickers etc. to make your project visually appealing.
2. Create a soundtrack for the book. (Choose songs that you feel would be appropriate to the themes in your novel.) You must include at least 10 songs. Create a CD cover with a design on the front. On the back of the cover list song titles and artists. On the inside of the cover write a sentence or two about why you chose each song. (You do not need to include a CD).
3. Make a board game that illustrates the plot of the novel. Be sure to include rules and instructions explicit enough for anyone to be able to play with out you there to explain it. Please also include a 2-3 paragraph description of how the game connects to the plot of the novel.
4. Create a character bag – Design a bag and put 6-8 objects that would be important to the character inside of it. Attach a 3x5 note card to each object explaining why it is important. Do not include anything that is not school appropriate. If your character is involved with drugs, alcohol, or cigarettes – use a picture on the back of the note card. Please do not include anything that could go bad (i.e. food items). Also be sure to label the bag with your name, the title of the book and the name of the character.
5. Make a diary for one character – choose one character and write a diary through their eyes for the major events in the book. Include at least 5, ¾ page entries.
6. Create a poster for the film version of the book. Include: Actors who will be playing main characters, producer/production company information, a catchy slogan and an attention getting picture or design.
7. Write a test for the novel. Use a variety of questions – multiple choice, true/false, short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and essay. Be sure to include an answer key. (Your test must be worth 100 points and have at least 25 questions).
8. Create a travel brochure for the setting of your novel. Include: Title (of your brochure); Geographical information – population, climate, religion, monetary units; Destination information; Sites to see and things to do; Hotels; Food; at least 6 photos (or drawings). On the back of your brochure write the title of your book, the author, and a 3 sentence summary.
9. Write a letter to the main character of your book asking questions (minimum 10), protesting a situation, and/or making a complaint and/or suggestion. Your letter should be at least ¾ of a page in length.
10. You must give up your favorite pet (whom you love very much) to one of the characters in the book. Write a paragraph or two explaining which character you’re going to give the pet to and why. Also create a “Care Instructions” page to give to that character. Include: Food/meals, sleep, medications, bedtime, play, vet info, etc.
11. Interview a character from your book. Write at least 10 questions that will give the character the opportunity to discuss his/her thoughts and feelings about his/her role in the story. Then, pretend you are the character and answer the questions.
12. Imagine that you are the author of the book you have read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a movie producer trying to get that person interested in making your book into a movie. Explain why the story, characters, conflicts, etc. would make a good film. Suggest filming locations and the actors to play various roles.
13. Design costumes for dolls and dress them as characters in the book. Write up an explanation of who these characters are and how the fit into the story. You should design a minimum of 1 costume for 4 characters in the book. (if you have a book with less than 4 characters see a teacher for help modifying this assignment.)
****** REMEMBER!!!! You MUST complete Level C in order to get credit for Level B. If you want to receive credit for Level A, you must complete Levels C and B!
****** Just turning in a project does not guarantee you a certain grade. Each level of the project will be scored for Quality and Completeness.
****** Projects incomplete at Level C will not be scored.
