I hope all of you had a pleasant Thanksgiving holiday. The days are flying by to the new year. The older I get the faster the years go by.
Language Arts
Our newest book is one of my favorites. It is "The War with Grandpa." The students have a difficult time when we start this story. They can not understand how anyone would want to have a war with their grandparent. Ask your child how they feel now that we are almost finished.
We are using a program that is used in the fifth grade called Reader's Workshop. It involves thinking about what we are reading and sharing these thoughts with each other. Students might tell each other what they wonder about, or what they are thinking about.
MATH
In math, we have just finished a unit on geometry. The students enjoyed working with shapes and learning about angles, symmetry, and rotational symmetry. Students did very well with these concepts. We are just beginning a unit on fractions. We will be learning about equal fractions, mixed numbers, and improper fractions. The students like to work cooperatively with each math topic.
Reminder
We are beginning the multiplication times tables. In third grade, they learned the 0x,1x,2x,5x and 10x tables. Students must master all the times tables this year to be successful.
Repetition, memorization, and practice will help your child learn their facts at home.
Science/Social Studies
.
In science, we are working on a unit on Rocks and Minerals. We are doing experiements on minerals to see how scientists can find out what minerals are in a specific rocks.
MATH FACTS
Practice, practice, practice! PLEASE!
All students should know their math facts...addition and subtraction and now all multiplication facts. They need to stop using their fingers! Please help them practice as much as possible.
Special Notes!
Ms. DiVinney, our student teacher, will be back in the classroom full time on February 2, 2009. She will be here until the end of April.
Our new student from Turkey, Ali, is enjoying our classroom. The students have been very welcoming and helpful. He is beginning to learn English.
