WELCOME TO MRS. LLOYD'S HOME PAGE
April 2, 2008

Dear parents,

Happy Spring!

You can tell it is spring as the students are coming in excited each morning. It puts a spring in their steps.

With only three months left to fourth grade, it becomes apparent that there is much to do and learn before the end of the year.

Our time capsule is coming along nicely.  Students have finished their letters to their "eighth" grade selves.  Parents will be asked to write a "love letter" to their "eighth grade" child during April vacation.  I will be sending a letter home to explain what I will need from each parent or guardian.  If you have any empty frosting cans, we can use them for students to fill for individual "time capsules".  These will go into our classroom "time capsule".

Remember- reading is expected to be done every night for at least 15-20 minutes minimum.  Reading logs are to be signed and returned every Monday along with the pink folder. This is not an option.  It is a daily homework assignment. Please help your student become a better reader and writer by encouraging them to read daily.

Language Arts

We are reading one of my favorite books. It is called "The Big Wave" by Pearl S. Buck.."  It is about two young boys who live in Japan about 60 years ago.  The big wave is referring to a tsunami that hits their village. Ask your child to tell you about this fantastic book.
We are also reading non-fiction books on the ocean and its creatures.  Encourage their interest by discussing what they learned about each day. Students are working on researching a sea creature.  They will be completeing a power point presentation in Computer class.

MATH

In math, we are working on a unit on common and decimal fractions. Students should be able to add and subtract both types of fractions.  They should also be able to rename a fraction with an equivalent fraction and a decimal fraction.
We just finished a unit on multiplication of two digit numbers by one digit numbers.  To improve their multiplication facts recall, we are having a one minute timed test everyday.  When a student passes a timed test, the student will move on to the next time table. Some students have mastered through the nine times table already.  Please help your child by studying the times table they are personally on each day. Students must master all the times tables this year to be successful in later years.

Science/Social Studies

.
We will be finishing our unit on the ocean. The students are very excited about studying the ocean and its creatures. They would be happy to share with you all they have learned so far!
In social studies, we will begin studying the North Eastern region of the United States.

MATH FACTS

        Practice, practice, practice!!!  PLEASE!!!
All students should know their math facts...addition and subtraction and now all multiplication facts. They need to stop using their fingers!!! Please help them practice as much as possible.

Special Note!

Ms. Amy Anzaldi, our student teacher, is teaching all subjects now. She is their full-time teacher until May 4th.  She is doing a wonderful job.

REMEMBER - Together - We Can Do This!

CARPE DIEM! - Seize the Day!

Always,
Mrs. Carolyn Lloyd
