Dear Families,
Thank you so much for helping your child return his/her homework when it is due. The reading bags, Fundations homework and math pages are coming back to school regularly.  The children like to share the stories they’ve read in reading group with you at home. After your child reads to you, please ask your child to talk to you about his/her books.  It’s good to make some personal connections with the books we read.  This promotes better comprehension of the story.  You could ask your child if he/she is like any of the characters in the story.  Or, you could ask if the story or the characters remind your child about something or someone in his/her life. Good family discussions about the books we’re reading will help your child gain a deeper understanding of the stories.  You could also ask your child to answer the questions on the “Question Wheel” in his/her book bag.  Or, your child could ask you the questions to see if you were paying attention to the story!  That would be fun!

Our class is one of the classes which will be earning a pizza party for having 100% participation returning the “Book It” calendars each month.  We only have April and May to go!  So, please continue to fill out the Book It calendars for the next few months!  It’s amazing how fast this year has flown by!  If you haven’t sent the March “Book It” calendar back to school yet, please send it back as soon as possible.  Remember if you misplace your calendar you could write me a note stating that your child has been reading at least 10 minutes a day.
Center School will be celebrating Earth Day on Wednesday, April 23rd.  (Rain date:  April 24th)  We have some wonderful activities planned for the children to do.
Our spelling tests for April will be on Friday, April 25th and Wednesday, April 30th.  Our spring recess is April 14th –April 18th.
We will finish our study of plants and begin our health/drug unit soon.  When your child brings science or social studies papers home with him/her, please go over the papers together.  The science and social studies assessments are based on the information we present in class which is included on the papers going home.
The children received the list of the first 100 high frequency words in their April homework packs.  Please review all of these spelling words with your children during April and May.  We will have a test on the entire list during the last week of May.  (25 words a day, May 27,28,29 and 30!)  It’s a lot to review but it’s so important for the children to have these words down pat as they enter into second grade.
Once again, please call me or write me a note if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s school experience.

                            Thank you!
                               Connie Wilde
