Dear Friends of 5Z-

Our class continues to focus on building a strong learning community.

Reading:

Students are continuing to pick “Just Right Books” for reading with stamina.
Students should also be reading at least 20 minutes per night Monday through Friday.  During this time students can be reading their “Just Right” book, a magazine, listening to an audio book, or reading with a family member.  Students should be starting to write Talking Points about their “Just Right” books in home and in school.

Writing: Students are continuing to develop ideas in their writer’s notebooks.  We will also begin to discuss organizing a five paragraph essay.

Math: We are currently reviewing multiplication.
Monday through Thursday students will have a problem solving homework that reviews skills and story problem strategies.  It is also important that students continue to practice their multiplication facts.

Social Studies and Science:  Students need to continue to practice the state names and locations.

Take a Break: Take a Break is a responsive classroom strategy that we use in 5th grade.  If students are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or unfocused they may take a short break in the take a break area.  Sometimes students who are not focused or who are making poor choices may be asked to take a break by the teacher.  This is not a punishment, but a way for students to refocus in a positive manner.  If a student has made a choice that requires a consequence, the student will have the opportunity to discuss his or her actions and reflect on a consequence that both the student and teacher feel is appropriate.  This may include a think sheet that the student will bring home to have signed by a parent.
