Dear Friends of 5H,

I want to thank everyone for their concern and understanding as I go through this difficult time in my life.

The Sturbridge Village field trip will be this upcoming Thursday, May 15th.  It is a great opportunity for the students to experience what colonial life was like.

We are in the third marking period.  I am excited for this last marking period.  We still have so many fun activities and concepts to cover.  This is also a time when I really begin to transition them for 6th grade, and the need to be responsible and independent.

In Writing during the upcoming week, we will be reviewing the idea of main idea in non-fiction texts.  The students will read different types of non fiction pieces and complete different activities that allow them to evaluate the text.

In Reading, the students will begin their next book club, which is focused on historical fiction texts: Bud, Not Buddy, The Watsons go to Birmingham, and Cook Camp.  These books all take place during decades in the 1900's and allow the students to experience through text the trials and tribulations that Americans went through during difficult times in our country.  It is a nice way to study history in addition to our Social Studies times.

In Math, the students will be concluding the topic of multiplication of fractions this week.  Their quiz is on Tuesday.  The students will also be working with some problem solving activities.

Our colonies unit is in full swing.  The students will be presenting their performances on the colonies.  They were divided into three groups: New England, Middle, & Southern colonies.  In their group they created three performances.  Each performance will encompass many of the essential questions from our colonial unit.  They had the choice of 2 or 4 projects for each performance.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me at khennessey@willingtonct.org or contact me at 860-429-9391 ext 202, and I am usually able to reply within 24 hours.

Sincerely,
Miss Hennessey

Important Information
* Please make sure the pink folders and reading logs are returned signed on Mondays.
* Students will have homework Monday-Thursday.  There homework on the weekend will be minimal.  During the week, it will typically be a math worksheet and an activity related to language arts, such as spelling, reading response, or writing response.  Please make sure that homework is: done in pencil, that time is taken to make it neat, and always remember to put your name on it :-)
*Also, students are expected to read at home every night for a minimum of 20 minutes.  It is very important to continually be practicing their reading skills in order to constantly improve upon those skills.  If for some reason your child cannot read for 20 minutes on a particular night they need to make sure that they read for at least 20 minutes, 5 different times throughout the week.

*If any parents would like to volunteer in the classroom, helping with classroom chores and activities, duplication of materials, or the scholastic book orders please send a note in with your child letting me know the times and days you are available.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to give me a call or stop in before or after school.

Thanks,
Ms. Hennessey
