SUBJECTS AT A GLANCE

Math

Students are amazed that they can now multiply 2 and 3 digits by one digit.  They also learned about factors, multiples, prime numbers and square numbers.  Students should be working on learning multiplication facts for 8s.

We are now working on telling time to the nearest minute and on figuring out elapsed times.

Activities to do:

Discuss what multiplication actually means.  Give your child practice in the multiplication facts for 1s, 2s, 4s, and 8s.  Find out what fact(s) are difficult for your child and ask what the answer to this fact is in weird odd moments.  Make a game out of it, make it fun.  It is amazing how a quick repetition over time will help your child.  Once one fact has been conquered, move on to another and then mix them up.  This will be very beneficial.

Elapsed time lends itself well to daily applications in real life.  Have your child figure out how many hours and minutes it will be from the time they have breakfast to the time they will eat lunch or engage in some other activity.  You could also have them help you figure out what time something you're cooking will be ready to take out of the oven or what time a movie might be ending.  Another great way to utilize this skill is to tell you child what time you need to be at a particular place and how long it will take to get there.  Have them figure out what time you should leave so you won't be late.  Any activity which starts at one time and ends at another or an activity which is timed can be used to practice this skill.

Language Arts

We are currently working developing a main event when writing narrative stories.  So often students do a great job leading up to the most important part of a story only to summarize the event when they get there!  We will be focusing on telling step by step a detailed accounting of what occurs during the main part of a story.

We are also reading short fiction and non-fiction selections and discussing how to answer questions about them similar to the type of questions students will find on the CMTs.

Activities to do:

Read a story or book with your child and discuss the details the author uses so the reader knows exactly what is happening.  Point out that the author tells step by step what's happening.

Discuss the characters from a video or book.  Describe them and how they might have changed as a result of their experience.  Discuss whether they would make a good friend to have or not and why.

Spelling

We are working on using apostrophes to show possession for both singular and plural nouns.

Activities to do:

Write notes to your child using apostrophes to show ownership.  Write messages to you child and make mistakes.  Have your child proof read your notes and challenge him or her to see how many mistakes he or she can find.

Science

    Gone fishing.

Social Studies

We finished our unit on the government.  We are now working on natural resources found in the United States.  Students will be choosing a natural resource, doing research on it in the computer lab, and then using the information to develop a project to present to the class.  Students will be developing questions to which they will find the answsers. Research skills and rephrasing information will be taught at this time.  We will also start our study of the Northeast region of the United States.  This will encompass landforms, climate, resources, and ecomomics of the Northeast.

Activities to do:

Point out landforms and resources as you drive around New England.  Discuss types of jobs people do and the climate that people in New England experience.
