The children have been working hard in preparation for Ice Cream Night, which will take place on Wednesday, May 28th. I hope you can attend
Please send in your child's reading paper for May at the end of the month. If your child’s paper is lost, you can drop me a note acknowledging that your son or daughter has met their reading goal.
Literacy
Soon I will be spending some time working with the children on developmental reading assessments (DRAs). The goal in kindergarten is to read at a level 3. Other assessments including writing, phonemic awareness and sight words will take place over the next couple of weeks as well.
The Zoo
The kindergarteners will be going on a field trip to the Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island on Friday, June 13. Permission slips will be going out soon. We will talk about the kinds of animals we might find at a zoo, as we prepare for our trip. The children will take part in a number of zoo-related activities including sorting animals based on different attributes or characteristics.
Math
We have been talking about weight and using scales to determine which things are heavier and lighter when making comparisons. The children have learned that size does not determine how heavy or light an object will be.
The children have been playing many games that involve adding and subtracting numbers. One of the students’ favorite games involves using food such as cereal. You can play this at home with your child. Give your child a handful of cereal and tell them a story problem involving adding or subtracting. They can use the cereal pieces to act out the story and solve the problem. Here are some examples:
Addition:
One day Sally went to the grocery store with her dad. Here dad put 6 apples into the shopping cart. Sally picked up 4 bananas and put them into the shopping cart. How much fruit did Sally and her dad have in the shopping cart?
Subtraction:
Connor planted 8 flowers in his yard. He forgot to water three of the flowers and they died. How many flowers are still growing?
Star Student
For the last few weeks of school, we will do show and tell for the students star student day. The children can show the class how to do or make something (craft, dance, game), share something special from home or teach them something like a song. I would prefer no pets, due to allergies and the children’s comfort level around unfamiliar animals.
