Welcome to the Reading Room, 211!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

My last day of teaching in Canterbury will be on Wednesday, October 14th as I have taken another reading specialist position in North Stonington, CT.
My commute will be much shorter and I will be closer to my daughter's school.

Thank you for all of your support and cooperation while your child has received services in the reading room. I have had such a wonderful time working with Canterbury's children and getting to know the families.

Mrs. Pisowloski will continue to support students in the reading room to keep the extra reading support ongoing.  Administration has been looking to hire another reading specialist to fill my position. Every effort is being made so there is no lapse in services.

Thank-You,
Heidi Mehringer-Macina

Grade 1: Students in grade one needing extra support in reading
come to the reading room four or five days a week.  They learn
reading strategies to improve their decoding skills, comprehension, and writing skills. The Early Intervention Program (TLC) is designed to provide intensive, systematic, individualized reading instruction for such students in grade one.

Grade 1-4: Fundations is another program used to instruct students decoding and spelling skills.  This program is explict, systematic, and research based. To learn more about Fundations, visit Wilsonlearning.com.

Grades 2-4:  Students in these grades needing extra support in reading work in small groups.  Students learn how to increase their reading ability with the help of programs like Visualizing/Verbalizing, Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing, Fundations, and READ NATURALLY.

At Canterbury Elementary School, we make every attempt to tailor reading support to the students' precise needs.  When they show signs of independence, the students no longer come to the Reading Room and are monitored for continuous progress within the classroom.

Observations:

Parents are welcome to visit the reading room and observe a one-to-one lesson with the reading specialist and their child. Making the link of school to home is VERY important to ensure reading progress and success!  Many parents have come to watch their child during a TLC( Teaching Literacy Through Competence)/Fundations lesson and leave with new strategies to utilize at home.

Reading Strategies to Use While Reading:

1. Picture Clues:  Look at the picture clue and get your mouth ready for the first letter of the word.

2. Chunking: Look for small words (chunks) inside the big word.
(in-side for inside, be-low for below)

3. Sound It Out: Get your mouth ready for the first letter and move through the word blending the sounds together.  (This strategy is used best when combined with other strategeies in context.)

4. Tracking: Point underneath the words while reading by using the pointer finger on the right hand.
(Left handed readers may find that using their left pointer finger over the words may be more comfortable than pointing underneath the words.)

5. Reread:  "Retrack" the sentence to try to gain
meaning or read an unknown word by going back to the beginning and reading the sentence over.

6. Read On: Skip the word, saying "blank" and read the rest of the sentence. Go back to that unknown word and
put in the word you think it should be. Check the sound/letter match for correctness.

7. Think About the Story: Use the knowledge you have
from your reading to make sense of the story.

Parents: Please be patient with your child while he/she reads to you.  We ask that you wait 5-10 seconds before trying to help your child read a word.  Give them time to use one of the above reading strategies.
