Welcome Parents and Students to the beginning of a wonderful 8th grade year. I am looking forward to working with and getting to know all of you. Below you will find an updated list of your school assignments as well as any important dates, activities or reminders. Remember, be proactive and write your assignments down during class and make sure to come and see me if you are absent or missing work.

ELT: During this period both the students and I will be "Just Reading" for the first 20 minutes of class. All students are required to have a "Just Reading" book selected and in class by Tuesday September 4th. This book should come to ELT class EVERY DAY!

DRAMA HOMEWORK:

Period 2 & 3 Drama: Welcome to Drama Class! I am so excited to be your teacher for this interactive, upbeat, and exciting class. I know we are going to learn a lot, push ourselves to try new things, gain confidence on the stage and have fun. Homeowrk for this class will consist of preparing speeches, memorization of lines, costume design, etc. Currently there is no homework.

Drama Homework for the entire week: Brush your teeth with the opposite hand. Practice muscle memory.

***Vocabulary Quiz on terms #1-10 on Wednesday. Study your vocabulary!!

ENGLISH HOMEWORK:

Period 4,5 & 9:
Tues. Sept. 4th- No Homework Tonight

Wed. Sept. 5th- "How to get a head" Adding details to your writing assignment.

Thurs. Sept. 6th- No Homework

Fri. Sept. 7th- Develope your topics list- add 15
possible topics to your list for Monday.

Mon. September 10th- Select your Fiction critique novel and bring this novel to class on Friday. You must show me the book for apporval.

Tues. September 11th- Complete the model web graphic organizer with your focus being on ideas. Look for "unique, beyond the obvious details". Go deep below the surface! Show don't tell! Use direct quotes! Make connections! Keep in mind all that we talked about regarding IDEAS! Refer to your reference handouts if necessary.

Wed. September 12th- Select your Fiction critique novel. Due on Friday!! Make sure to bring this book with you to class on Friday.

Tues. September 18th- No homework

Weds. September 19th- Sentence Fragment practice #2

Thurs. September 20th- Read for 20-30 minutes out of your fiction critique book.

Fri. September 21st- Read for 20-30 minutes out of your fiction critique book.

Mon. September 24th- Choose your writing topic and create the graphic organizer for your topic.

Tues. September 25th- Write your introduction. Remember to have a hook!! You may hand write it or type it and save it to a flash drive. You must bring your intro to class on Wednesday. We will be in the computer lab so you must have your paper started and be ready to type for Wednesday.

Wed. September 26th- Continue writing. Any work that you complete at home should be available to you in school. Either email your work or have it saved on a flash drive. But have access to it for Thursday. We will be in the computer lab one more time on Thursday.

Thurs. September 27th- Continue writing. Your COMPLETED rough draft is due on Monday Oct. 1st. You must have your draft in class. REMEMBER!!! There is no printing allowed during English class. Be prepared.

Fri. September 28th- Finish your rough draft over the weekend. It must be complete for Monday. No excpetions!

Mon. October 1st- Rough Draft due today. No homework tonight.

Tues. October 2nd- Using your editors comments, revise your introduction only, directly onto your rough draft in a DIFFERENT COLOR INK! I need to see the edits and the revisions! Bring this color pen to class on Wednesday along with your rough draft. I will be looking to see that you made some changes! Also, please bring in a book to read if you finish with your work early tomorrow.

Wed. October 3rd- Finish making the revisions directly on your rough draft. I will be checking to see that you made revisions tomorrow in class. Bring your rough draft with the changes to class tomorrow.

Thurs. October 4th- Continue making revisions. Have a parent or an older brother/sister edit for conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.)

Fri. October 5th- Continue making revisions. Your final copy is due on Tuesday, October 9th. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Fri. October 12th- Periods 5 and 9 only- complete the graphic organizer for the Patriot Pen contest.

Mon. October 15th- No Homework.  Working on the Patriot Pen Writing Contest in school. All typing must be done in school. You will be able to print in school for this paper.

Tues. October 16th- No Homework.

Wed. October 17th- Work on your Fiction Critique. Due November 5th!

Thurs. October 18th- Be working on your fiction novel critique. Due November 5th!

Fri. October 19th- Complete your found poem. Publish it according to the guidelines and turn the final copy in on Monday.

Wednesday, October 24th- 1. Please have your parents/guardians sign your Free-write paper and return to class on Thursday.

Thursday, October 25th- Complete the writing goals worksheet and continue writing your Fiction critique.

Friday, October 26th- Fiction Critique (Due Nov. 5th)

Tuesday, October 30th- Work on your Fiction critique. 7 pts extra credit if you turn it in on Tuesday!

Wednesday, October 31st- Keep writing your fiction critique. 5 pts extra credit if you turn it in on Wednesday!!

Thursday, November 1st- Work on your fiction critique. It is due November 5th! Only three more days left to work on it. There is no reason for this critique to be late from ANYONE! 3 pts extra credit if you turn it in on Thursday!

Friday, November 2nd- Finish your fiction critique over the weekend. You have had plenty of time to complete this assignment. There should be no excuses. The critique is due in class on Monday!! No more opportunity for extra credit points.

   Prepare for your power point presentaiton. Pleae be working on your notecards, presentation slides, and practice delivering your speech. Be ready to go on the designated day. Make sure that you are prepared no matter what!

   3. Read pages 1-10 in you book and complete the 1st journal entry. Follow the journal entry guidelines I have given you on the yellow handout in your binders!

   4. If you have watched your power point video, your reflection is due Three days from the day you watch the video.

Thursday, December 31th- Study for your vocabulary quiz and bring all 12 journal responses to school. They will be collected today.

Friday, December 14th-  Construct the rough draft of your thesis statement over the weekend. You will need it for Monday when we will revise and finalize your statement.

Thursday January 3rd- (Period 4,5) Complete the Introduction graphic organizer and bring to class on Friday. Also, bring in your flash drive by Monday.
        (Period 5) Complete your evidence collection. You should have a min. of 8 quotations.

Friday January 4th- (Period 4,5) Complete the Body paragraph organizer for your first body paragraph. Have your flash drive in class on Monday.
  (Period 9) Complete the paper outline organizer and your intro graphic organizer for Monday. Bring your flash drive to school on Monday.

Thursday, January 10th- Complete the conclusion graphic organizer and continue working on your rough draft thesis paper.

Friday, January 11th- Over the weekend, please complete the entire rough draft of your thesis paper. You must have a complete draft (Intro, 3 body paragraphs and conclusion) printed out when you come to school Monday. If you have trouble printing at home, you must have a note from your parents.

Friday, January 18th- Make any final revisions, add your bibliography page and title to your paper and bring in your final paper on Tuesday. Paper is due Tuesday, January 22nd!

March 4th, 2008- Using the Mary Celeste story, highlight/underline all the facts/clues that you find throughout the story. There should be a lot of them!!!

March 6th, 2008-complete the Mary Celeste Fill in the Blank Quiz. It is due on Friday! NO exceptions!. This is a quiz grade!

March 7th, 2008- Complete the graphic organizer for your Mary Celeste Theory! Due Monday!
    Begin reading your mystery book!!!

March 13th, 2008- Make revisions to your Mary Celeste theory. Continue reading your mystery novel and filling out the story recipe.

March 14th, 2008- Final copy of the Mary Celeste theory due on Monday. Make any final revisions. Continue reading your mystery novel and fill out the story recipe. Story recipe is due Friday, March 21st. Your book must be read by then as well.

March 19th- Continue reading. Benchmark: Complete the stumbling block portion of the story recipe. Begin working on the clues/red herrings/crucial clue.

March 20th and over the long weekend- Complete the remainder of the story recipe including the climax and resolution.

March 31, 2008- Complete the two character sketch sheets for class tomorrow. Make sure you have your story recipe and the character sheets tomorrow.

April 1. 2008- Dialogue cartoon strip.

April 2, 2008- Continue typing the rough draft of your mystery story.

April 3, 2008-Period 4- complete the second part to the cartoon. Write out the cartoon in dialogue form with the speaker tags and narration.
            

Period 5 and 9- Type for 20 minutes on your mystery story. Make sure to save your work to your home computer and your flash drive.

April 4, 2008- Type your mystery story. Continue adding on to your rough draft. Spend at least 20 minutes on it this weekend.

Docent Speech Week: Please refer to the calendar I have provided as well.

April 7th, 2008- Now that you have your monument assignment, please begin your research. Find one article/website and take notes using the organizer.

April 8th, 2008- Continue your research. Find one more article and/or website and add notes to your graphic organizer. If you run out of room on the organizer,. create a new one on your own. I will have extra copies in class tomorrow. If you feel that you can, begin putting your main ideas onto notecards as demonstrated in class.

April 9th, 2008- Complete any needed research and take notes from that research on your graphic organizer. Begin making your notecards. Make sure you have your flash drive with you in class tomorrow or else you will not be able to type.

April 10th, 2008- Continue typing at home. Any work you complete at home, save to your flash drive and bring to class for Friday. Friday in the library is the last day for typing. The goal is to have the rough draft finished by Friday.

April 11th, 2008- If you did not complete the docent rough draft in class today, you must finish it over the vacation. Remember to bring in a rough copy of the speech to class on Monday for peer editing.

April 21, 2008- Take the peer editing corrections and suggestions and make any necessary changes at home this evening. Have a parent or older sibling proofread your speech as well. Bring the final draft to class on Tuesday.

Tues, May 20th- Brainstorm topics for the memoir. Have five possible topics on the graphic organizer in class on Wednesday.

Wed, May 21st- Continue writing. You 2 page memoir is due on Friday. There is no computer lab time in school. All the writing and typing needs to be done at home on your own. Make sure you have a note from home if you need to print at school.

Thurs, May 22nd- Continue writing. Decide on your three words and how you will present them.

Fri, May 23rd- Continue writing. Paper due Tuesday.
