We are already half way through the school year. Preparations are in the works for the Junior and Senior Proms and of course Graduation.
In all the excitement of everyday school life, it should be remembered that regular attendance (and being on time to school)is still very important. If a students miss a day of school, they miss a learning opportunity.
Absences add up quickly. The new attendance policy is 12 unexcused absences with denial occuring on the 13th day. After the 13th day, you can request an attendance hearing before a panel of teachers and administrators to request that the student's credit be restored so that the student can continue his/her career ambitions at Kaynor; otherwise the student may return to their home school.
Attendance Letters are sent home after 4, 8 and 12 unexcused absences. It is important for students to bring their official excused notes (doctor, dentist, etc.) to Guidance or to me as soon as they return to school so that their attendance record is always up-to-date. When a student reaches 10 unexcused absences the parent may be asked to come in for a conference with an Administrator, Guidance Counselor and the Attendance Officer. The purpose of the meeting is to work on solutions to remedy poor attendance and help the student remain in good standing at Kaynor Tech.
Parents of students who are habitually tardy or do not serve their detentions will also be asked to come to the school to conference to work on resolving the situation.
It is our policy to work with the students and parents to make their four years here a viable learning experience. If you have any concerns regarding attendance, please contact me.
WORK BASED LEARNING (WBL)
CWE (Cooperative Worksite Experience) has been renamed Work Based Learning. The premise has not changed. It is still opened to Juniors and Seniors who maintain an overall average of 70 in academics and trade and demonstrate trade proficiency. They must also be in compliance with the school attendance and code of conduct policy.
Students prepare for WBL in their freshmen and sophomore years in shop. Sophomores are are eligible for summer WBL as they enter their junior year.
Students enjoy getting out into the real world and showing an employer their skills and learning something new about their trade. We are always looking for employment/career leads for our students. If you know of an employer who is looking for apprentices, please let me know.
Presently we have 23 students out on WBL with more students looking to go out into the workplace before the school year ends. Students can check with their department head or come see me for more information concerning positions.
We also encourage employers to come into the school and speak to students in shop. In January the sophomores made their annual trip to Sikorsky for a tour and career exploration.
UPCOMING EVENTS
A. April 1st a respresentative from the U.S. Department of Labor will speak to Sophomore and Junior shop students about workplace safety.
B. April 3rd a representative from "Drive to Survive" will address the Seniors on driving safety - a timely and important issue.
C. Toward the end of April, Sikorsky Aircraft
Corp will begin their annual summer recruiting of Juniors. This is an 8 week summer program in their chosen shop area.
