Contemporary Social Issues (12th grade): This Senior Elective Course is designed to challenge students to examine issues confronting them in today's world. Topics include (but are not limited to): government, foreign and domestic policy, economics, social issues that impact young peoples'lives today, and current events that warrant investigation and decision making. Students make extensive use of Internet resources to research the above topics and formulate positions that they may present in a variety of formats (position papers, PowerPoint Presentations, debate, etc. Every effort is made to make topics covered relevant to the everyday life of the students. The goal of this course is to prepare the students to make informed life decisions.
Modern United States History (11th grade): This Junior History survey course covers the period of the 20th Century to the present. We begin with the Second Industrial Revolution (1865-1920), the "Age of Invention", and the end of American isolationism in 1898 with our involvement in the Spanish-American War. We cover the major issues of the 1900's with an emphasis on how these events have lessons for us today.
Hello since last time!
JUNIOR CLASSES:
The Juniors ended the last cycle with a test on the Second Industrial Revolution and the "Age of Invention". When they return from shop cycle we will be studying the end of American isolationism and the beginning of American Imperialism. We will study the Spanish-American War and its results and see how America sought a colonial empire in which to sell its surplus products.
SENIOR CLASSES:
The Seniors have been studying the presidential and vice-presidential campaigns of 2008. We looked back at the elections of 2000 and 2004 for perspective on the current campaign. Students are looking closely at the campaign promises of both parties and are making decisions on which side seems to be the best choice in the upcoming popular election. Don't be surprised if they ask to watch a debate on TV (hope it doesn't interfere with a favorite TV show !).
More to come........
