II. Modern Turkey
a. How did Kemal Attaturk change Turkey?
- made it secular, rights for women, made Turkey more like the west (U.S.A, Britain, France, etc)
b. How did Islamic people that did not want Turkey to change feel about Turkey becoming more like the U.S. and the West?
- Many did not like it because it was a cultural threat to traditional Islamic customs. This change in Turkey led many Islamic Arabs to form anti-western groups like The Muslim Brotherhood.
III. Anger toward Arab Leaders and Governments by their OWN PEOPLE
a. What kinds of governments do most Arab nations have?
- Dictatorships, theocracies, monarchies, corrupt
b. How are citizens of these corrupt and oppressive governments affected?
- limited rights, no say in government, women lack rights, limited economic opportunities (of the 22 Arab nations 50% of women are cannot read and write, 51% of children say they would rather live somewhere else, Spain has a higher GDP than all 22 Arab countries!!)
c. If people in these Arab countries are so mad at their own governments, why do terrorists blame the United States?
- The United States has for decades made deals with Arab dictators to help them stay in power in order for a steady flow of oil and resources back to the U.S.
- i.e. Saudi Arabi...The U.S. has for decades supported an awful, inept, ignorant, and corrupt royal family in Saudi Arabi in return for steady oil.
- It is easier to commit acts of terrorism against the United States in comparison to Police states/dictators (less border restrictions, more rights, easy movement, less overall human restrictions in the U.S.)
IV. The Emergence of Wahabism
a. What is Wahabism?
- Wahabism is basically a "hijacked" version of the Islamic religion that does not preach the peace and tolerance but, the opposite.
b. Where did Wahabism originate?
- Saudi Arabia
c. What impact did the emergence of Wahabism have on Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Islamic world?
- Teaching of intolerance
- Teaching of extremist pov: Suicide bombings, etc.
- Bin Laden was taught Wahabism
- Wahabism has had a profound impact on the development of radical viewpoints about the United States. Remember...15/19 terrorists from 9/11 were from Saudi Arabia.
