U.S. History I AP - Period 1

I'm pleased to announce that period 1 chose the country of Japan for door decorating during our Week of Respect, and they won!! Students did an outstanding job of looking up Japanese information about flags, words of respect, and Japanese stories. Our door to room 312 looked beautiful, and it's still decorated for all to see.
On Tuesday, we will continue to discuss and study chapter 3, Settling the Northern Colonies. Students will finish watching a short video on the Mayflower. Following the video we will discuss the Mayflower Compact and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Students have received a number of outside readings that will coincide with our class discussion on Tuesday, as well as the rest of the week. All terms for chapter 3 have been assigned, and along with the reading of chapter 3 should now be identified in notebooks. By Wednesday, we will take a look at the life of Anne Hutchinson who was an outcast from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Throughout the remainder of the week, our study will focus on the founding of other northern colonies, and those responsible for each colony's beginnings. additionally we will discuss the Pequot War, Roger Williams, William Penn and Sir Edmund Andros. Students will next be tested by Tuesday of next week.

Sociology - Periods 5 & 8

I would like to thank our student, Leah O'Loughlin and her mother, for being guest speakers in class on Friday. A couple of years back, Leah suffered a brain injury due to complications from open heart surgery. Leah now uses a wheelchair for mobility, and communicates through the use of a computer. She is truly an inspiration, and she has shown her fellow students that remaining positive in the face of adversity is the key to moving forward.

Students were asked to look for family photos over their 3 day weekend. These photos will be used to design family collages to be used for our Family Day project on Wednesday, November 9.

On Thursday, students had their first major test for marking period 1. The test covered information about the 4 most common methods of study used by Sociologists. Test grades will be posted this week. On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week I will finish a discussion of handicaps, and hopefully bring home the point that no one has the right to judge another situation until they fully understand what it is to "walk" in another person's shoes. To that end, all permission slips for student participation in Friday's "handicap" exercise are now due. This will be the 5th time I have "handicapped" my students in order for them to fully grasp the term empathy. Students will be asked to remain "handicapped" for periods 1-3. This exercise has proven to be a wonderful learning experience.
On Thursday, I will begin our second unit of study on Heredity and Environment. Terms for this unit will be assigned and identified in notebooks. Invitations for Family Day 2011 have been distributed. Please mark your calendars and join us from 9-11:00 am in the high school cafeteria. Also, my students and their guests will be asked to bring in family heirlooms as part of our celebration.

World History Honors - Period 9

Last week, students submitted reports on a key person, event, or invention from the Renaissance period. A brief oral presentation accompanied each report. Grades for these reports will soon be available. On Friday, students had their first major test of marking period 1 on the Renaissance. I'm pleased to say that many students did very well. Those grades are now posted.
On Tuesday, we will begin sections 2 & 3 of chapter 14, the Reformation. Terms for section 2 of chapter 14 will be assigned on Tuesday, and Tuesday night's homework will be to read pages 333-336. Section 2 of chapter 14 will focus on the lives and actions of Martin Luther from Germany an Henry VIII from England. Both men would play a role in the Reformation, but their reasons for breaking away from the Roman Catholic Church were very different. Assignments for the week will include 2 outside readings, the reading of pages 333-336, the identification of terms from section 2 and the questions on page 336. Our format for the week will be lecture, notes and discussion. A brief video on the Reformation may be shown on either Thursday or Friday. Students are aware of their responsibility to continually read and re-read all information that we are studying. A quiz is always possible.
