SORTING IT ALL OUT
Well,  it’s almost Valentine’s Day!  Hopefully, you will receive a surprise in the mail on or before that date.  Please be sure to let your child know how much you value the fact that a lot of time and thought went into creating something that could be sent to you!  This week we will “sort” it all out. Soon we  will read  our friends’ names on Valentines. We will also participate in many “heartfelt” activities.  Have you noticed that we now  work independently for a period of time each day during guided reading? Don’t be Jsurprised if it takes a little adjustment. Neatness, accuracy and organization all take practice.  When it comes to learning, be assured that we get to the “heart” of the matter...every day...in a fun-filled, age appropriate, hands-on way! Why not extend the fun tonight by helping your child to think about their address as you anticipate the arrival of that Valentine to your home by next week!  Use new sight words like “here” in  describing the arrival.  Keep practicing those phonemic skills through wonderful websites like www.abcya.com   It’s fantastic to hear and see the children using their words both in reading and writing!

GOT MAIL?
Just so  you know, address awareness is on the report card. Very few children truly understand what a street name, house number and zip code are all about.  That’s why it will be important for you to help your child write or trace your address  on the special envelope that is attached. Please put TWO stamps on it and return it to school before Friday.  That way we can  place a very special  card inside for your family that will arrive at the address you help your child to print on the envelope for Valentine’s Day next week.  Learning about community helpers, like postal workers, makes more sense when a child has a  personal experience  that helps to foster understanding.  Why not go to the local post office together?  Mail is a wonderful tool for reading and writing!

MONEY, TIME AND REPORT CARDS!
Our new chapter in math has begun.  This is an interesting unit that combines a look at money and time.  We will attempt to integrate our little look at the Presidents as well.  Ask your child who is on a penny.  See if he or she can tell you the face that appears on a nickel and a dime.  You might be surprised to know that we know quite a bit!  We also will take the “time” to learn o’clock this week. It’s also report card time!  Please look for a special portfolio of work that will go home on Thursday along with your child’s report card for you to sign and return so you can see the progress for yourself. Isn’t this great?

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES TO DO AT HOME:

For Wednesday Night:  Math pages
For Thursday Night:

Did you make a Valentine for each class member?  List of classmates attached
For Friday:  Bring back your envelope that was attached to this newsletter (special size) addressed with two stamps on it.  This will then have a very special Valentine put inside that will be mailed to your home or the address of your choice on the envelope!

Yours in Learning,
