April 2008

Every morning I will be checking each student's journal and talking to them about their BOC reading. It is important that nightly writing and reading takes place at home. Please go over this homework with your child.

Literacy

Every day we begin Literacy with spelling practice and various phonics and comprehension drills. Next we move to The Wilson Reading System. We start with sound cards where we drill phonics rules and sounds, blend sounds together and make new words. We also read from controlled text and complete phonics based Wilson worksheets.
Next we  share a short story and/or a novel (Magic Tree House). The short stories we have been reading are about a boy and his robot. Ask your child about these fun adventures. After reading the story we complete comprehension and phonics questions based on the story. This month's novel is "Twister on Tuesday". We will learn how tornadoes are formed and some other interesting tornado facts. Did you know winds inside a tornado can swirl at close to 300 mph?
Spelling quizzes are given about 2 times a week. You will find study flashcards in your child’s homework folder.

Math

We will explore multiplication through different games and by making homemade study tools. We are all doing a great job learning our times tables!

Science

We have begun preparing for the science fair with the introduction to the scientific method.Last week we prepared and completed a science experiment and worked as a group to fill in the lab report for the experiment. The children will be creating and writing their own experiments which will always include a lab report. The first 2 weeks of April will be devoted to picking an experiment for the science fair and listing all materials needed to complete the experiment.

Field Trips

We have two field trips planned for this month. The first trip is Friday April 11th to The Atlantic County Community College. We will be visiting the culinary arts program and enjoying lunch prepared by the students.
Our second trip is a 6th grade field trip planned for April 14th. Thanks to Mrs. Ryan we are being treated to an all expense paid trip to NYC to visit a Holocaust museum.
