In literacy we are focusing on our reading skills at this time. Students have been practicing their vocabulary and spelling each day and will be reading the story "Treasure Island" as a class. This will help them with their oral reading skills, comprehension, and their ability to identify literary elements in stories. Due to their oral reading each day, we will be taking a short break from the required daily silent reading.
MATH
In math, we are working through the book called "Accentuate the Negative." Students practiced how to add and subtract positive and negative numbers together before the spring break. They have now moved on to multiplying and dividing negative and positive numbers. They seem to be getting the hang of the multiplying and adding much quicker than the subtracting. With more practice, they should soon master it all!
SCIENCE
In sciece, we are learning about moving continents. The students seemed quite shocked at the idea that the continents may have drifted over time and may have been connected at some point in history. They will be learning how the earth gives us clues from rocks and the ocean floor about what these areas were like thousands of years ago. We are also studying the role of the moving plates in causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies the students are learning about the first foreign policies in our country. The students learned that America didn't even have an army after the Revolutionary war so we remained neutral to foreign conflicts. We will be discussing the need for a foreign policy and comparing and contrasting the foreign policy of the late 1700s with the foreign policies in place today.
