The students are in this class to improve their reading, writing, and comprehension skills to prepare them for the state testing in the spring. Each day they receive a journal with 2 writing prompts. They have the first 20 minutes of each class to work on a full page journal assignment. Journals are collected and graded each day. If they do not finish their journal during regular class time, it is their responsibility to finish it for homework.
Students need to come to class prepared each day.

7th Grade GEPA Prep Classes
The seventh grade classes are reading a unit on Colonial America. Their first story was "Eyewitness to the Boston Tea Party" followed by "Lexington and Concord." They are now starting to read "Ready" an excerpt from Esther Forbes' novel "Johnny Tremain." This story will be followed by another excerpt from the same novel. It is called "It's Tonight." Both of these short stories detail more facts about America's fight for independence from the British. They learned the 6 Response Strategies to apply when they are reading. The first story will end with completing a character sketch of one of the main characters in the story. The second story will end with writing a descriptive paragraph. They will also be completing a vocabulary test and comprehension test on the stories.
Their next section will be on Tough Times. The stories in this section deal with people surviving tough situations in their lives and making them stronger.
8th Grade GEPA Prep Classes
The eighth grade classes are in the midst of a unit on the Civil War. The first story was "Caring for the Wounded." It detailed the life of Clara Barton. They then read "The President's Been Shot" which was about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. They are now beginning a unit on author Paul Fleischman. There will be four short stories in this unit. They are each about soldiers who fought in the Civil War. They are : "Toby Boyce," "Gideon Adams," "Shem Suggs," and "Judah Jenkins." They have also learned the 6 Response Strategies to apply when reading stories in their Sourcebook. They will end their units by writing a character sketch and also by completing a dialogue between two characters. They will then be completing a vocabulary test and comprehension test on the stories.
Their next section will be on Memories. The stories in this section are entitled: "A Moment in the Sun Field" and "The One Sitting There."
