Can you believe how fast our kindergarten year is flying. Looking back at the last 110 days, we have learned so much and have made lots of new friends. We still have a lot of learning left to do this school year though.
I'm very proud of what great readers and writers your children are becoming. We have been writing, writing and writing every day. After we celebrated the 100 days of school, the helper of the day now writes the whole morning meeting letter and the helper is in charge of choosing friends to come up and underline our popcorn words and circle the letter that we are currently working on. We are getting fast at recognizing our words. It's great to see that we understand the concept of a sentence and that using punctuation at the end of the sentence is the end of that idea. I am enjoying watching students use that same knowledge when writing on their own.
In Math, we are learning many concepts that will spiral into first grade and beyond. We are learning to read an analog clock and the difference between digital and analog time. We are also learning about the 4 coins and each of it's values. When we play 4 corners we now use the coin names for each corner rather than a color.
In Science we are learning about solids changing to liquids and back to solids. We read Bartholomew and the Oobleck with Mrs. Price's 5th grade class and then we made the gooey oobleck. We couldn't decide if it's a liquid or a solid, so we called it both. No one had ever seen or felt oobleck before. It was ooey gooey fun. We also played with ice cubes. We played "Cold Cube", it's a lot like Hot Potato, but we used an ice cube instead. We played until the cube melted. Then we used ice cubes as paint brushes, that was chilly fun.
Thank you to all of our guest readers during our annual Read Across America celebration. We enjoyed having you share your family's favorite books. I know your children were so excited to have moms, dads, grandparents, cousins and siblings read to us. Feel free to come in and read to us anytime, you don't need a special occasion.
Monday, March 17 is St. Patrick's Day. Don't forget to wear green...or else!
Speaking of special occasions...Easter is right around the corner. Our room moms are planning a small Easter activity on Thursday, March 20 just before our spring break. They will be in touch if they need anything to add to the activity.
Remember to keep practicing those word cards and play word and number games while waiting in line, at restaurants while waiting for your food...anytime. Take the change out of your wallet or pockets and have your child identify each coin and let them sort them. There are so many ways to help your child learn and play at the same time. Thank you for your help and interest in your child's first year in big school. We're almost first graders!
Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you may have. There will be no spring conferences this year, but if you ever have a concern and feel we should meet, I would be happy to meet with you.
