All students this month will expand their knowledge about the art elements: Value, Line, Shape, Color, and Texture when they learn about “Pop Art” and the most famous Pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
Campbell's Soup Cans by Andy Warhol
I Love Liberty by Roy Lichtenstein
The first week they will learn about the two different techniques these Pop artists used to paint their images. Then they will draw a bunch of bananas to fill the page and trace over the drawing with fine-tipped back marker. Using a ruler, they will draw stripes to fill in the background. The following week using the technique of Roy Lichtenstein with dots, they will fill in and shade their drawing of the bananas. Finally, they will color in the background of stripes.
All grades with the exception of eighth will create two animals in a collage that are the same except one is cut-paper design and the other is torn-paper design to create two types of texture. They will draw two birds using three simple basic shapes for each one. They will then cut one set of shapes out and tear the other set. Then they will put each set onto a tree background and glue them into branches. To complete the collage they will draw details on the birds and cut and glue leaves onto the branches.
In addition, third grade will create a scratchboard painting by filling white art paper with multi color thick dark solid lines in crayon and then painting over the design with a mixture of black tempera paint and a few drops of detergent. The following week they will scratch away a design on their paper revealing the colors below.
Fourth grade will produce a "Foil Art” drawing of an Indian Mask and Fifth grade will produce a “Foil Art” drawing of a Colonial Flag with 13 Stars. Both these classes will also produce a “Where I Live” poster by drawing a simple picture of several houses along a street. Then they will choose different textures to do crayon rubbings over so they can fill in each of the building they have drawn. They will outline the buildings and add details to them.
Sixth and Seventh grades will create a Cityscape drawing that looks 3D. The first week they will use one-point perspective to draw a Cityscape scene, with horizontal, rectangles and vertical lines for the buildings along the ocean road. The second week they will trace pencil lines with makers, add details to the buildings like windows, doors, signs, awnings, shingles etc., and then color in buildings, ocean and street with colored pencils.
Eighth grade will create Stained Glass Art of Mythical Beasts using transparencies sheets. They will color in the beast, frame and background with watercolor markers and then by adding water with Q-tips to the background they will use the technique of value.
