Welcome Edline!

* * * *PARENTS PLEASE SIGN UP FOR EDLINE! * * * *

Parents and students should have received an envelope last week from Mr. Kelly. This envelope contained information pertaining to our new program, Edline. Parents and students have separate codes to use.  Please make sure you sign up as quickly as possible. You can check your child's progress on a daily basis and keep track of homework, tests and quizzes.

EXPECTATIONS AND CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

Upon entering the classroom, please keep in mind the following:
·    You must be in proper uniform. This is reflected in your participation grade.
·    You are not permitted to bring food or drinks of any kind into the classroom.  If you have a medical condition requiring you to eat or drink in the classroom, make sure you get a note from the nurse.
·    All backpacks, gym bags and pocket books (regardless of value or size) are NOT permitted on the desks.  These items should be placed underneath your desk or on the floor in the front of the classroom.
·    Cell phones are NOT permitted in the classroom at anytime.  If your cell phone is out and within view, it will be taken.  You will also lose FIVE points from your participation grade.  This rule includes Sidekicks, Ipods, or any other type of electronic equipment.  NO excuses.
·    REMEMBER; this is a Regents course. You are all required to take the MATH A Regents in January 2008. As a New York State requirement for graduating high school, ALL students must pass this exam.   Blessed Sacrament-St. Gabriel’s High School requires all students to pass with a minimum grade of 65.   If a student would like to try for a better grade or did not pass in January, we will be offering the exam again in June 2008.

Our math classes will be conducted on a professional level. You will conduct yourselves as young adults displaying appropriate classroom behavior.  You will be held responsible for your own actions. Therefore, the following is expected;

·    Come prepared for each class; textbook, notebook, homework and writing instruments.  This is reflected in your participation grade.
·    Quietly organize yourself. That means getting your books out and opened for class, taking out homework (if any) and starting the DO NOW that will be posted on the board at the beginning of each class.
·    Arrive on time for each class.  If you are late more than twice, you will get a detention.
·    Respect your classmates as well as myself. That means, no yelling out in class, no rude comments and no arguing.  This wastes time!   Raise your hand if you have a question or would like to speak.  This is necessary to avoid too many people speaking at the same time.
·    You will not have private conversations with your neighbors during class time.  If you are talking you are not listening and therefore, you are not learning.  This is also reflected in your participation grade.
·    There is no gum chewing, food of any kind or drinking permitted during class time.    You know the rules; you were present during the orientation…do the right thing.  Again, breaking these rules is reflected in your participation grade.
·    There are no trips to the bathroom during class time. Visits should be made before or after class. Please keep in mind our time together is only 45 minutes a day.  This is a Regents course and we do not want to waste a minute of our time.

TESTS
·    Test/quizzes are taken directly from the examples put on the board, examples taken from homework assignments as well as examples taken from class handouts.  There is no reason for anyone not to perform well!
·    I will not require tests/quizzes to be signed by your parent(s)/guardian(s) unless I feel it is necessary. Your parent(s)/guardian(s) will be notified of your progress should there be a problem.
·    If you are absent the day a test or quiz is given, you must take that test/quiz the next day you come back to school.  If you do not take the test/quiz the very next day you return you will receive a grade of zero.
·    If you have been out of school for at least two days prior to a test/quiz, please see me the day you return.  A date and time for you to take your test/quiz will be determined at my discretion.

HOMEWORK
·    Homework will NOT be graded.  You are expected to do homework. However, keep in mind if I do a spot-check and you DO NOT have your homework, you will lose ONE POINT from your FINAL quarter grade.
·    Tests/quizzes (pop-quizzes as well) are taken from your homework assignments as well as from material put on the blackboard.
·    Homework is assigned at least three times a week.
·    Assignments will be written down on the board. Homework is to be completed the night it is assigned and brought in the next day.   I do not accept excuses for missing homework.  If homework is not present during class time, you do not receive credit.
·    Homework cannot be handed in the next day.   I will be more than happy to check your homework that is handed in late to make sure it is correct, but you will not get credit for the work.
·    Homework will be checked and corrected in class the next day.
·    If more than two homework assignments are missed, a telephone call will be made to your parent(s)/guardian(s). Remember, homework is a reinforcement tool for YOUR benefit.
·    If you are absent for whatever reason or for any length of time it is your responsibility to get the homework assignments.  I will accept your homework and give you appropriate credit if you show me your completed homework the day you return to school.  Remember there are three ways to get your homework assignments; you may ask me, you may ask a friend or you may check the school website.  To check the school website go to bssg.net.  Once at our site, you may click on my name and it will bring you directly to the class page.  If for some reason you cannot access the school website, you may also access our class page by typing schoolnotes.com.  Follow the directions at this site for locating our page.  If you have absolutely no clue how to go about accessing this information, please see me and I will be more than happy to give you a demonstration!

VACATIONS DURING REGULAR SCHOOL DAYS

·    If you are taking an early vacation or will be out of school for a long period of time, make sure you see me at least one week before your last day. This will give me enough time to get some work together for you. DO NOT wait until your last day in class and ask me for work—you will not get it.

EXTRA CREDIT

·    There will be NO extra credit work assigned. If you show up for class, take appropriate notes, ask questions when necessary and do your homework, there should be no need for extra credit.

EXTRA TUTORIAL SESSION

I conduct an EXTRA math session every day during your 6th period lunch.  For those of you that would like to come for extra help, please feel free to join me in room 204.  Also, since we are in a classroom you may bring your lunch and eat while you work.  I would strongly advise you to bring in your own lunch so you may get to the classroom within a timely manner.  Each session will last the entire 45 minutes.  However, there are a few rules you must follow:
·    Bring your own textbook, notebook and pencils and be prepared to work.
·    Arrive within 15 minutes after the bell rings.  For this reason, you should bring your own lunch.  However, I will provide the cafeteria monitors with a list of names so those of you buying lunch will be given priority on the food line.
·    This extra session is for working.  If you are talking or if you are doing work other than math you will be told to leave.  If you are disruptive in anyway whatsoever, you will be told to leave.
·    For those of you bringing food from the cafeteria, it is your responsibility to bring your trays back downstairs.
·    Finally, when coming for this session keep in mind classes are still in session. You are not permitted to roam the hallways or to go to your lockers.  Once you leave the math session, you must return to the cafeteria for the remainder of the period.

GRADING

Your grade for each quarter will be broken down as follows:
Tests            60% of your final grade
Quizzes        20% of your final grade
Participation        20% of your final grade

PLEASE REMEMBER

If you are having difficulties, please do not hesitate to ask questions.  I am not a mind reader—I need feedback from you.  If you need something explained or help with even one problem, I am available during your lunch period in room 204.  If you are not in school and need to ask a question, you may send me an email at GKelly@bssg.net.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS

·    If you have a question or concern, please do not hesitate to call me.  Chances are you’ll get my answering machine. Just leave a message with a telephone number and I will call you back. I normally make my telephone calls in the late afternoon or early evening.
·    Please feel free to email me anytime.  I check my mail quite frequently, and will get back to you the same day.

I am here to help you understand geometry and to help you pass your upcoming Regents exam.  I want you to pass this class.  I want you to pass the Regents.  I will do my part to help you, but you also have to be responsible and do your part to help yourself.

With that being said, welcome to my class!  I’m looking forward to working with you.
