     -mealtime was a social event
-those who shared the meal were considered extended family (covenant partners).
-sharing food was a sign of acceptance, refusing to share was treating that person as an outsider

    Outcasts of Jewish Society
Judaism had clear rules for holiness in daily life:
           dietary laws
           ritual purity
Jesus established the law of love as the only path to true holiness-completely loving God and Neighbor. Jesus did not respect social bondaries, but treated all with equal respect and dignity
Jesus Welcomes Those Who Are Outcasts
       1. Anawim - the people of the land, the little ones. The poorest of the poor. (e.g., shepherds)

2/6/08 Wednesday Day 2
The Messianic Secret
The Suffering Servant
text p 106-107
Notes-
Messianic Secret
“Who do people say that I am?”
Big puzzle in Mark is the “messianic secret”

The center of Marks gospel comes with Peter’s confession that Jesus is messiah, the passion prediction, and the rebuke of Peter

Jesus commands people to remain silent about his identity
They are not to tell who healed them

The messianic secret points to the paradox that Jesus is the powerful son of God who is destined to die on the cross
Jesus' mission is one of suffering and death
    Apostles hoped for hero-messiah,
    not a prophet-messiah

Mark presents Jesus as powerful savior who saves through his heroic suffering
Jesus teaches with exousia—power and authority
Jesus commands and vanquishes his enemies

2/5/08 Tuesday Day 1
text p 103-105

Faith is crucial to receiving salvation from Jesus

Text p 100 "The Beginning of Jesus Ministry"
    Jesus Christ, Son of God
    Baptism of Christ
Notes--additional info on Composition and themes
p100-103
      The Beginning of Jesus’ Ministry

The Identity of Jesus  -- Son of God
Mark opens proclaiming that Jesus is the Son of God
Title son conveys the intimate and eternal relationship between Jesus & the Father

Prophets in Old Testament use son of man:

Ezekiel - describes one who brings Israel renewed life, restored city, magnificent Temple

Daniel –a glorious god-like figure, whose appearance is a judgment against corrupt kingdoms of the world and vindicates Israel, glorious manifestation of divine power

Jesus’ baptism reveals who he is

Arrest of John the Baptist is literary warning that struggle between good and evil prevails throughout the gospel

Marks the beginning of his public ministry

The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus on the last Sunday of the Christmas season, the Sunday after Epiphany.

Discipleship is a life rooted in Jesus in union with the Church, caring for others and livin in harmony with others.

Composition—

Mark has 3 call narratives—how Jesus called others to hear and respond to the word and power of God. He recruited ordinary people and expected immediate and total commitment

Apostolos–apostle—means one who is sent—apostles were sent out 2 by 2 to minister together and had to bring nothing with them but rely totally on God.

Immediately after each call narrative, the power of evil shows itself in different forms:
A man with an unclean spirit
            Confrontation with Beelzebub, a demon
The murder of John the Baptist

Being a disciple is an invitation to journey with Jesus and follow his example, achoice to accept grace and turn from sin. Discipleship is a process of self-fulfillment:
Involves a life of prayer action  & trust in God

Mark teaches the conditions and consequences of discipleship

          political authorities-King Herod and his
                supporters, Romans

          disciples abandon and betray jesus

          son of God

Structure of the Gospel of Mark
   -Prologue
   -The Galilean Ministry

Notes on p 73-74
The Incarnation-the mystery whereby the Son of God, while remaing God , became man. "Carna" means "Flesh"
In Jesus the human and divine natures are united yet distinct.
The Second person of the Trinity became man for several reasons:
1. to reconcile us with god
2. so we might know God's love
3. to be our model of holiness
4. to share his divine life with us ("grace")

The First Narrative-The Beginning of Ministry
   A. The Baptism of Jesus (see your notes on Baptism and the Trinity)
   B. The Temptation in the Desert:
Jesus was tempted by 4 kinds of power:
      1. material power-over nature & things
      2. spiritual power-over all created beings-
      angels, devils and human beings
      3. political power-to rule the world as king and
      reap its rewards
    The Temptation Narrative
-reminded Mt's audience of Israel's time
wandering in the desert during the Exodus
-Jesus succeeds in being faithful to God where
      Israel had failed
-He chose to trust in God's will and plan for
      salvation

    strength helps us resist temptation
