It was strongly recommended that students write the answers to the study guide questions for The Great Gatsby in their notebooks, but it was not required.

If the student failed the unit test on The Great Gatsby on Friday, February 29, or has failed for the third quarter, that student is now required to write
all the answers to the study guide questions for A Doll's House, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and A Farewell to Arms.
Notebooks will be checked on the day the act or novel section is due, and graded as part of the quarter grade.
Students do not have to write out the questions, but must number the questions accurately, and include the question stem in the answer.  Writing must be legible!

This may help some students to focus and pass the course.

Advanced English 12
Course Objectives and Outline          Spring Semester 2008

Advanced English 12 is offered in conjunction with the Link Program at Iona College.

Spring Semester: Iona English 250 New Perspectives in Literature and Culture
A thematic approach to the study of literature organized in terms of a single significant topic or pattern: for this semester, themes of love in modern literature.

Spring Research Assignment:
Students have signed up for an individual topic on which to give a ten-minute oral presentation to the class on the assigned day. At the class before the presentation, give me
1) the xeroxes of at least three secondary sources you
have used to prepare your speech (see requirements in
packet), or the books you are using, with pages
      marked by post-its.
2) an exact copy of the notes you plan to put on the board
      for the class (typed)
3) a typed bibliography of these sources on a separate
sheet.  (Use the bibliography format from first
       semester.)
4) your grade sheet, outlining the requirements

There is a 25 point penalty for failing to give me these
four items at the class before the presentation.
Your speech should reflect considerable preparation and
knowledge of the topic.
You are also expected to hold the interest of the audience.  Credit given for innovative ways of conveying your information and making it real.
Use the blackboard, and include visuals or skits or dramatizations to illustrate your points.  NB: you may not videotape yourself giving the speech; you may show video of scenes from plays or movies.
Your presentation is worth 50% of your quarter grade, whichever quarter you give it.
See student packets for further instructions.  Calendar
for speeches will be given out in class.

10 A English    Blessed Sacrament-St. Gabriel High School

Due dates for required 10 A outside reading tests, spring
             semester:

     Wednesday May 7
     Wednesday June 4

A unit test on the play RUR (currently reading)and all science fiction stories from the third quarter will be given the week of April 14.
We will then start a unit on language and logic, using books that will be signed out to the students next week.
Each student will choose a topic for an oral report on the jargon of a patricular field. Assignment will be explained in class and posted.

It is easy to tell if a student has not read the outside reading book they chose for the required test!  Ask to see the grade sheet your son or daughter is getting backon Thursday April 3!  Next required test Wednesday Nay 7.

9A English      Blessed Sacrament-St. Gabriel High School

Due dates for required 9A outside reading, spring semester

   Fourth quarter
     Friday May 9
     Friday June 6

There will be a unit test on To Kill a Mockingbird on
Wednesday April 9.  Students were informed of their third quarter averages so far, on March 31.  Ask to see the
paper!  Several students really need to do well on the remaining quizzes and on the unit test to have a chance to pass for the quarter.  There is a quiz every day.

It is important to keep up with the daily reading, even if the student has previously read the book.

We will be starting a research assignment on April 10, doing the preliminary work (bibliography, thesis, etc.)
but not writing the actual paper this year.
