SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community
We are rapidly approaching the end of the first marking period, and we are looking forward to meeting with parents during parent/teacher conferences.  A letter will be mailed to the parents who have signed up for a conference confirming the date and time of the conference.  If you have not scheduled a conference but would like to do so, please call the school.  The number to call is 294-2470.  Please remember that space is limited on the actual conference days.  As always the district website will have up-to-the minute information on upcoming events and activities. Also, the CJ Hooker Weekly Parent Round-Up is given to students on Fridays.

In ELA the students continue to study folklore.  We have analyzed the folktale "Chura and Marwe" from the Junior Great Books series and are currently completing an essay related to this folktale.  Students will also be examining legends and fables.  As students continue to work in their writer's notebooks, they have also been reviewing elements of a sentence. Please ask to see your child's Independent Reading Log.  These logs need to be handed in weekly.

In science students are studying the scientific method.  Information regarding the scientific method project has been given to the students.  The project is due on November 28, 2007.

Students continue to study the Fertile Crescent in social studies.  The test for this unit will be on November 15, 2007.

In math class the unit on decimal operations is drawing to a close.  The test is set for Friday, November 9, 2007.  Next, the students will be studying data and statistics.

If you have any questions or concerns as we progress throug the school year, do not hesitate to give us a call or send us an e-mail.

-- email addresses: khiggins@gcsny.org; nmesic@gcsny.org; jrosado@gcsny.org

-- To arrange for a team conference, please call 294-2470.
-- Be sure that quizzes and tests are being signed. You can check the HW hotline and your child's assignment pad to see if there are any graded assignments that must be signed.

DEVELOPING GOOD HABITS & SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD AT HOME:

-- We are happy to provide additional help after school. That being said, students MUST MAKE ARRANGEMENTS IN ADVANCE to be sure that we are available for that help. Sometimes we have meetings and are not available -- always wise to plan ahead.

-- When you need help, ask for it! Don't wait until after the test- let us know right away.

-- When after school review sessions are offered prior to tests, it is expected that students will complete the review material for their class that day.

-- Please organize binders at the end of each week and make up any missed assignments as quickly as possible.

-- Assignment pads are expected to be filled in completely each day for each class. We keep a class assignment pad, so if you miss anything, you can ask to see that pad so you can get the assignments.
