Dear Families,
I just wanted to say "Hello" and tell you how hard it is to keep you informed about the classes. I usually see each class once a week. There are, however, days where Mrs. Iannacchino, Ms. Ryan and I either co-teach or share that individual class teaching period.
Sometimes the Upppers or for that matter any grade is working in the Lab and I am curious, so I stop my work to take a peek and I stay a bit to watch, discuss, or help with the research project or what ever the students are involved in doing at that time. Recently, the Uppers were doing their research for Circus Science and with Mr. Flanagan's approval I joined the class. This is our first experience with this topic so needless to say I am very excited, but a little nervous. It is often difficult to edit the content of the written information the students have gathered. Acquiring, analyzing, synthesizing, or organizing are skills each Upper is responsible to master. As we know, cognitive function is developmental so each individual student will be on their own level of acquiring these very important skills.
Our Fourth Graders are in full swing with their class assignments. Whether they are chosing a Newberry Award young adult book and writing a report or being exposed to mysteries, poetry or historical fiction. This month they are busy learning the scripts for their play. If all goes as planned the production for the Journey that Saved Curious George will be performed in the middle of May.
The Third Grade students are in the process of creating their own fantasy stories. We initially had a discussion about the elements needed to create this type of writing and then they started their brainstorming session. I'll try to keep you informed about the progress of this assignment.
The Second Grade just completed their study of important women for the month of March. They were asked to do a little research and then create either a stamp or coin to honor the women they learned about. Hopefully they will be mounted and ready to go home this week.
First Grade is having their double period again. Recently, they performed a truly sensational play/musical of Really Rosie. Thank you for helping them study their lines and singing the songs. Right now they are creating animals to be displayed for Circus Science. They will be listening to stories about the five senses, but I think we will also need to hear some poetry, since April is Poetry Month. I don't know if it's a stretch, but perhaps we will dabble in writing some poetry.
Kindergarten will be working on creating an alphabet book. I wanted a project to tie in to Circus Science, so after reading ABC by Eric Carle I thought it could be fun to have the children brain storm about animals. We did take a little detour and included other interesting things besides animals, so I am anticipating an exciting compilation.
Pre-Kindergarten students are helping with the reading of our stories. Sometimes it feels like a chorus. They are being very responsible for their choices and managing the care of the library books.
Nursery is amazing. They have matured within the last half of this year and my notation in my plan book was about their participation in an informal question and answer portion of our session. They sit together as an entire class. They seem to enjoy the story time and the songs or finger rhymes. They have learned the circulation process and can delay by putting a book on hold if a borrowed book has not been returned. I am very pleased about with their library etiquette.
