COURSE GUIDELINES

10th Grade Curriculum          

Industrial Revolution, Revolutions in Western Europe and Latin America, Nationalism, Growth of Western Democracy, New Age Imperialism, World War I, Russian Revolution, World War II, Growth of Nationalism and Revolution Around the World, World War II, Cold War, Modern Global Political and Economic Issues, Terrorism

GRADING POLICY:
TESTS                   50 %
QUIZZES               15 %
HOMEWORK        20 %
PROJECTS           15 %

SUPPLIES:
- a BINDER (looseleaf & dividers)
- a two-pocket FOLDER (required for writing portfolio)
- spiral index cards (one for each quarter)
- pens

MY EXPECTATIONS:

1. All interactions in our class will be positive and respectful.

2. You are expected to participate in class activities and discussions, as it is calculated into your participation grade.

3. LATENESS and CUTTING are NOT allowed, and will reflect negatively on your quarterly and overall grades for this course.

4. All assignments must be handed in ON TIME.  All work must be neat and reflective of your own efforts.  Homework will ONLY be accepted late during the week that it is due.  In such cases, you will receive half credit for completing the assignment.  There are no exceptions!

5. You are responsible for ALL work completed in class and assigned at home.  If you are absent, you must make up the work and hand it in on time.  Upon returning to school, you are also responsible to immediately make up ALL quizzes and exams missed during your absence.

6. You are required to take a Regents Examination based on this course in June.  The exam tests on material addressed in 9th AND 10th grade Global History & Geography.  Therefore, there will be regular exams on the ninth grade curriculum throughout the school year.  ALL exams will be announced in advance.  However, there may be unannounced quizzes.

7. You are responsible for and expected to keep up with all reading assignments, as I may not cover every aspect of the curriculum in class.

Extra Help will be held after school on Tuesdays until 2:30 PM.  If you would like extra help on any other day or time, please see me anytime throughout the school day to set up a more convenient appointment.

Due on 9/12:  Who was Robert Owen?

Due on 9/15:  Complete ALL scaffolding questions for DBQ on Industrial Revolution.  Write your answers in COMPLETE SENTENCES.

Due on 9/17:  Complete the Main Themes Review Sheet for the Industrial Revolution.

TEST ON THURSDAY 9/18: The Industrial Revolution (unit exam)

Due on 9/23:  Read & analyze each document on the New Imperialism worksheet.  Answer the questions in complete sentences.

Due on 9/24:  Read pages 392-398 in your textbook.  Complete the two-sided worksheet entitled The Partition of Africa in complete sentences.

Due on 10/3:  Read 422-428.  Complete the 20 multiple choice questions on Japan by putting each question into a complete sentence (see examples on the attached worksheet).

Due on FRIDAY OCT 3:  1st Quarter Vocabulary Project (all words must be written in a spiral index card book)

Due on 10/7:  Complete the review sheet for New Age Imperialism.

Essay Task:
1- Define the word "imperialism"
2- Discuss the motives [causes] for imperialism
3- Discuss BOTH the positive & negative effects of imperialism in a SPECIFIC area [Africa, India, China]

Due on 10/16:  Movie Analysis Sheets for The Last Samurai will be collected at the end of class today!

Due on 10/21:  Read the documents on German & Italian Unification.  Answer all questions in complete sentences.

Due on 10/22:  Complete the 20 multiple choice questions on Nationalism by putting each question into a complete sentence (see examples on the attached worksheet).

OCTOBER 22:  Go to the Little Theater for a Peer Leadership Presentation - "A Class Divided"

Due on 10/29:  Read 477-483 & 542-549.  Complete the Venn diagram comparing and contrasting Lenin and Stalin.  Then, read Totalitarian State and answer the two review questions in complete sentences.

Due on 11/12:  Read "The Black Hand and the Murder at Sarajevo," and answer the 5 questions that follow on a separate sheet of paper in complete sentences.

Due on 11/13:  Read "Total War" and answer the five questions that follow on a separate sheet of paper (or on the back) in complete sentences.

Due on 11/18:  WWI documents & "Crime of the Ages" political cartoon (worksheet; write in complete sentences!)

TEST ON FRIDAY 11/21:  World War I (& Nationalism)

Due on 11/26:  Movie Analysis Sheet will be checked in class for accuracy and completeness.  The questions are based on two movies viewed in class over a three day period.

Due on 12/12:  Movie Analysis Sheet will be checked in class for accuracy and completeness.  The questions are based on the movie, Swing Kids, viewed in class over a three day period.

Due on 12/17:  Road to World War II worksheet  (This assignment will be accepted for full credit on 12/17.  You will receive 5 Bonus points if you hand in the homework on 12/16.

THEMATIC ESSAY ON FRIDAY FEBRUARY 13:  Justice & Human Rights Violations
*Define "human rights"
*Identify 2 examples of human rights violations that have occurred in a specific time & place
*Describe the causes of the violations
*For each violation, discuss one effort that was/is being made to deal with the violation

Due on 2/24:  Read 592-594; Answer question 5 on p 594.

Due on 2/25:  Read 604-612
* Page 604: Define: superpowers; detente; containment
* Page 609: questions 1 and 2
* Page 612: questions 3 and 4

Week of 2/23-2/27:  Complete the Cold War terminology packet as we cover the information in class.  This assignment will be checked throughout the week.

Due on 3/5:  Read "No Peace for Gorbachev" and answer the questions in complete sentences.

* Explain how these weapons changed the course of the war

Due on 3/24:  Write a 1-2 paragraph reaction to the video shown in class (The Dying Rooms).  Be sure to answer the following question:  How is China's one-child policy a human rights violation?  Explain the causes and issues related to the violation.

Due on 4/21:  Complete the packet of African Independence Movements using the attached reading.
