Welcome to Grade 6, Team A, Reading

My name is Mrs Zostautas and it is my intention to encourage a love of reading that will last a lifetime!

To that end, every child has homework every evening--it is to read for 20 minutes.  They may read any book, magazine, or newspaper of their choice.

We also participate in the 20 Book Challenge.  Each student is asked to read 20 books by June.

Week of 10/1-10/5  We have completed our first non-fiction packet last week and your child will be getting it back from me on Tuesday (10/2). We will be starting CASTLE IN THE ATTIC this week. We will also be doing a school wide practice of the ELA test on Tues., Wed. and Thurs. Homework continues to be reading for at least 20 min. each night.

Week of 10/9-10/12 We are continuing to read CASTLE IN THE ATTIC.  Five week reports should be arriving at the end of the week.  Any concerns or compliments don't hesitate to call.

Week of 10/15-10/19 Students have a packet on the World's Largest Cat that is due on Thursday 10/18.  They are to continue to read for 20 minutes each night except Monday 10/15 (I gave them the night off due to the reading of the packet).

Week of 10/22-10/26  Students were assigned a packet, The Red Planet, on 10/22 and it is due on 10/25. They are NOT to do the last page or "sentence completion."
We are continuing to read CASTLE IN THE ATTIC in class. Different classes are in different parts of the book due to interuptions and other unforeseen delays.
Reading for 20 minutes is homework every night this week.

Week of 10/29-11/2 Students are assigned "Hurricane: Killer Storms" packet this week and it is due 11/1. They are to continue to read for 20 minutes each night except Wednesday (they have the evening off from reading).

Week of 11/5-11/9 Students are assigned, "The Mystery of Machu Picchu" packet this week. It is due on Thursday 11/8.
For the next two weeks there will be no packets assigned. Students only homework will be reading for 20 minutes each night.  Every student should be reading their 6th book in order to meet the 20 Book Challenge.

Week of 11/26-11/30 Students are assigned the, "Fuel Cells: Cheaper, Cleaner Power" packet this week.  It is due on Thursday 11/29. They are to continue to read each night for 20 minutes.

Week of 1/7/08-1/11/08 Students homework is to read for 30 minutes every night. All students should have handed in a letter about a book they've read since September. All students should be on book #12.

Week of 2/4-2/8/08  Students are to continue to read for 30 minutes every night and make a note when they complete their reading.  This note can be a question about the story, a prediction, an "I wonder" statement or just a comment about what their reading made them think about.

                    Happy Reading!
