In the Persian folktale “The Severed Head”, a physician’s decapitated head poisons a tyrannical king.
In my opinion, the king deserves what he gets. He liked to watch others suffer. This dictator loved to watch the blood squirt out of people’s heads when they were executed. On page 53, he is described: “The king of Persia was a tyrant, a terrible man who loved nothing better than chopping off heads so he could watch the blood flow”. So, the king’s death by poisoning was a small price to pay for all the heads he ordered to be chopped off.
Evil kings are nothing new to history. Centuries ago, it wasn’t uncommon for people to be executed. Henry VIII had three out of his five wives beheaded just because they didn’t give birth to male heirs. Vlad the Impaler used to behead the people he conquered and impale their heads on stakes as a warning to others. In the movie 300, the Persian king was also a tyrant who wanted to take over the world.
If I were the physician, I would have listened to the innkeeper and fled the country instead of curing the king. He might have lived if he got away. Instead, he allowed the reward to influence him. As a result, he cured the king but was killed anyway.  If the vizier hadn’t spoken badly about the physician, everyone might still be alive today.

In the Japanese folktale “The Gruesome Test”, a girl tests her suitors cruelly and is a victim of karma.

In my opinion, the main character was deceptive to her parents. They wondered why she wasn’t married, but it was her own actions that caused her suitors to flee. “Her parents were mystified. Why did their lovely daughter terrify young men?” (74). The girl cooked, cared for her family and helped with growing rice. She seemed like the perfect daughter, however, the suitors saw a different side.
I think it was wrong for the girl to pretend to eat dead bodies. How can someone expect others to do something so disgusting to prove his love? Isn’t there some other way to do this? She met her match when she was confronted with a real cannibal. The soldier was disappointed in her prank and challenged her to really eat a dead body. The mischievous girl got what she deserved and will probably never do that again to her future suitors.
If I were a suitor who was challenged by this girl, I would tell her parents exactly why I wasn’t marrying her. I think her parents might not believe me, but at least I would have warned them.  I would tell the people in the surrounding villages about her love test and maybe that would keep others away.
