Welcome to High School Living Environment (Commencement Level: A Course You Will Succeed In and
Mandatory for Graduation Requirements
Instructor: Joyce G. Valenti: 28th year of teaching Living Environment (Biology)
(One of the authors of the New York State LE Commencement Level Core Curriculum
Regents Class)
(One of the New York State Coordinating Mentor for Biology Teachers across
the State)
(The Regional Biology Mentor for all biology teachers within ONC BOCES)

Teachers Association of New York State)
(New York State Teacher of the Year 1994- 95)
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5,2007
I welcome all students to the Living Environment Course, and I am very excited to be your
Living Enviroment teacher this year. We will be doing and learning a lot of on various
current topics in biology. Many of the content and concepts that you learn this year can
be related to real-world situations.
I highly recommend that you visit and use Schoolnotes.com since there will always be a
synopis of the day's lesson plans, assignments posted, internet web links posted when
applicable, etc. It is not only helpful if you are absent from class and need to make up
work, but also it is helpful to "reflect and summarize" what you have learned for the day, the
week, the month, and the year.
I highly recommend that you visit "Favorite Links". Some of the links will be archived all,
and some of the links will be updated with the topics. I also recommend that you visit the
flashcards every so often to review some key points. Remember, what we learn on Day 1 and
continue to learn on Day 180, will be on the LE Regents. YOU MUST PASS THE LE REGENTS. It is
to your advantage for your diploma, and the Regents counts as 20% of your grade.
Be mindful: Tests count 65%; Labs count 20%, and Homework and Classwork count 15%

Period A, B, and Period H
Lesson: To role play the brainstorming strategies of teachers who
write the Part C Questions for the LE Regents.
Three strategies used to access prior knowledge, to allow students
to bring their knowledge to higher levels of comprehension, analysis,
synthesis, and evaluation.
Students worked in groups of choice and were assessed individual and
group accountability.
Strategies used:
1. Word Splash Poster: after brainstorming and doing a quick internet
search, created word splash poster using words, concepts, and drawings;
generated 5 questions that people living in the US would generate about
these topics
2. Groups generated a focus question that they wished their peers to do
when visiting their poster
3. Walk-about (Museum walk): posters were displayed in the hall for
viewing and processing
4. Directed Carousel Brainstorming: student groups followed a carousel
flow as they visited and viewed posters; the focus question or activity at each poster
was done by each student in each group
Students were assessed for the following:
Opening Week “Controversial Topics in Biology”
Assessment
_________ Brainstorming/ Researching Topic
_________ Individual Accountability in Word Splash Learning
Strategy
_________ Group Accountability in Word Splash Learning
Strategy
Aligned with: LE Laboratory Checklist: Follow safety
rules in the laboratory
Period A and G:Lab Safety Lesson Part One
Learning Strategy: Assessing Prior Knowledge by analyzing a cartoon illustration
Worked with desk partner, whiteboards.
