SchoolNotes.com - Linking Educators to the Community
Dear Parents,

The WAJ guidance program offers many opportunities for students and parents.  This includes individual and group counseling, character education activities and classroom lessons, parenting classes, personal safety lessons, career education, college preparation and more.

WAJ is excited to be participating in a new character education program called Rachel’s Challenge.  Rachel Scott was the first victim in the Columbine High School shooting.  She believed in treating others with compassion and starting a chain reaction of kindness.  WAJ is committed to supporting Rachel’s message and promoting an atmosphere where every child and adult is accepted and treated with respect.

Rachel’s Challenge was kicked off at the 7-12 level on September 23rd with a moving presentation.  Approximately 35 students participated in a follow up training session.  On September 25th, the elementary students kicked off their program with a special assembly.  The momentum begun at the assemblies will continue throughout the year with two new clubs:  The Friends of Rachel Club for 7-12 students and the Kindness and Compassion Club for K-6 students.  The clubs are open to all students and will sponsor many community service projects and other special events.

The Friends of Rachel Club will kickoff their first community service project on Tuesday, October 6th.  Students will be selling Kindness Cards.  Rachel Scott believed that we can start a chain reaction of kindness.  Let’s see how far a little kindness can go!  Purchase one Kindness Card for $2.50 or a pack of 4 for $10.  When you doing something kind, pass the card on and start the chain reaction.  All of the kind acts can be logged online.  The money raised with help the Friends of Rachel club reach its goal of feeding 3 starving children in Haiti for a year and pay for 1 cleft palate surgery with Operation Smile.  To purchase a Kindness Card, please see me or any WAJ Friends of Rachel club member.

Please see the WAJ weekly newsletter for more ongoing events in guidance.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at 734-3400 ext. 1116 or email me at nbalder@wajcs.org.
