Movie or Television Show Reviews:
Using standard MLA format, type a one page, single-spaced, 12 pt. font, one inch margins, review of a movie or a television show. Use the following format to begin your paper. This week, focus on the concept of genre. What are some of the elements found in your selection that exemplify the genre (in general) that you are reviewing? For example, if you are watching a horror movie, what are some of the elements in your movie that are found in many horror movies?
Begin with:
Movie or TV Show Title:
Time Viewed: (specifically) example: Wednesday, November 5, 2008 from 9:00 10:00 pm
Genre:
Main Characters:
Main Conflict:
Overall Rating: (Develop your own format like Siskel and Ebert did with the thumbs up and thumbs down, or others use the number of stars, etc.)
Then, move into your movie review.
English 12 R Quarter Project/Midterm Review
Concept Due: Monday, December 15th, 2008
Movies Due: Monday, January 12th, 2009
You have watched countless hours of television shows and movies. This semester, you are reviewing these programs with an analytical mind. Each week, you are focusing on different aspects involved in making these productions. Therefore, your quarter project (5 grades) and your midterm (1/9 of your grade for the school year) will be a culminating activity that puts what you have reviewed to good use.
For this project, each student will choose a scripted drama that is already on the air. [This means no cooking show, no talk shows, no Real World shows, etc.] Then, each person will write a script (including stage directions and special effects, etc.) for twenty minutes of the show. Then, the student will find other students (seniors in English 12 R receive extra credit for each scene they act in, but underclassmen and family members may work for you as well) to act out your scene. You will videotape the scene, or, if you do not have access to a video camera, you will act out the scene in class. If two people want to write the scene together, they will be responsible for 30 minutes of the script. If three people want to work together, they will be responsible for 40 minutes of the script. If four people want to work together, they are responsible for 50 minutes worth of script.
Scoring will be determined based upon the following criteria:
Script: 35 points
Your script needs to be typed.
The parts need to be clearly labeled
Stage directions and actions need to be included and italicized.
Special effects need to be listed where they are included.
Your characters need to stay true to their personalities.
You need to have believable dialogue.
You need a central conflict for your episode, and you need to have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Production: 50 points
Your video (or in class production) needs to be at least 20 minutes long, but may not be longer than 25 minutes. If you are working together as mentioned above, you may only go over by five minutes for the amount listed. You will lose 5 points per minute over or under the required length.
You need to give credit to the original show you are basing your show on by including it on the script and on the video itself.
The actors do not necessarily need to memorize their lines (although that would be best), but if they do use lines, the lines should not be visible on the camera. [Place them offstage or incorporate them as part of the props.]
Quality of Video or In-Class Presentation:
When you are scheduled to present, you need to be ready.
You must have all of the necessary equipment ready to show the video.
Your video must have good visual and sound quality.
Your production needs to have been rehearsed, and you must be ready to go with only two minutes of set-up time. We have many productions to watch, so we need to be prepared.
Extra Credit: Students may earn up to ten bonus points per video as an actor. Memorizing lines and putting forth your best effort will provide you with the maximum points. Just ad-libbing it and messing around will earn you minimal points. Also, students may earn extra points by using their extra five minute time buffer to present no more than three thirty second commercials (up to ten points each) or two sixty second commercials (up to fifteen points each).
